re: The Purse Obsession

Meet my momma! I was born in the coach shop on the plaza.

Everything she buys is real.... Dooney,Coach, Kate Spade, Ralph Lauren, Hobo, LV... You could break into my house and be close to 5,000 dollars richer. She has so many purses its not even funny. I now get ill if we go into a department store to "look" at purses.... LoL look YA RIGHT!

its sad when your 17 and twitch when you smell real leather LoL

I have a friend who spent $500 on a Guggi bag 10 years ago. People thought she was crazy, but she carried that same bag every day for five years. So is that any different from buying five mediocre $100 bags that last a year apiece, or ten carppy $50 bags that fall apart after a few months?

re: The Purse Obsession

I personally, could never justify spending that kind of money on a purse....

I have several purses I bought a good 7 or 8 years ago which are still in fabulous shape, and I only paid about $40 per purse. Actually, they're in better shape than purses I've gotten in the past 6 months.

BTW, food for thought.... the fake Kate Spades and the real Kate Spades are manufactured in the same warehouse. The only difference is the label is sewn onto the real one, while it's glued onto the fake one.

re: The Purse Obsession

I thought the knowledge that counterfeit item produced organized crime profits was pretty common. It's big, it's as organized as all hell, and it's a vast money maker. The difference has been that over the past few years the a new player has been wedging their way into the proverbial pie. Yes, terrorist groups. Not just Al Qaeda, because there really is quite the mix. IRA, Russian mob, mafia, and those looking to strike in America's heartland. Take your pick. These are not mom and pop operations. They're overseen from the compiling of the materials, to the manufacturing, to the distribution.

Yes most of these items are manufactured in Italy and Eastern Europe. Then they're distributed to various Asian locations for exporting. Since there is so much exported from Asian markets these items are easily able to slip through the cracks. Many then come back to favorite European cities like, but not limited to Paris, London, Munich, Dublin, and Rome. Then others find their way to Australia, South America and US ports like Honolulu, LA, and NYC.

"I also doubt that Louis Vuitton is really suffering ... somehow I think the company is still doing just fine. Same with Gucci, Coach, Prada, etc. I doubt their execs are on the cusp of going broke!" - well this is just an attempt to rational bad behavior. It is illegal. That to me should stand by itself. But perhaps if the companies did not have to hire their own investigator and track down these items and bring them to prosecution, the cost of that favorite purse may just drop ever so slightly in price. Most in law enforcement, including Custom officials would not recognize really good fakes. And they aren't capable of following the trail from the sweatshops to the docks to the local corners. That one of many reason why it thrives the way it does.

Sorry I don't have links to post. It shouldn't be so hard to find. I really thought this was fairly well known. Do people think the guy hustling on the corner is reaping the rewards? Some...but not nearly as much as the guy at the port that he bought his stuff from, or the distributer than sent it packing overseas. Who do you think profits from criminal behavior?

re: The Purse Obsession

I understand the issues and many problems that arise with the selling of knockoffs of purses, watches, and many other objects that we purchase. However, I am going to answer the question as well.

3 Kate Spades, all gifts

3 Coach purse/pouches

I bought one fake YEARS ago, but the dye kept rubbing off on me. Personally, I don't buy any fake purses, because I don't feel like driving 30 minutes to get to downtown Los Angeles for a purse.

At a certain point, it seems like ANYTHING we ever do that is somewhat frivolous is supporting terrorism or ruining the world and society. We eat a doughnut and we are aiding obesity and diabetes. Fill up our gas tank and we aiding terrorism. Buy a magazine, and the paper is coming from the rapidly depleting rainforest. Heck, when we fart, are we worsening air pollution? So someone buys a fake purse, they are encouraging organized crime. If we bought the real one, might it support Louis Vuitton, who uses fur from trapped and farmed animals?

Is there no end....Is there anything left in this world to enjoy? Or does everything have consequencess.

re: The Purse Obsession

Shira, i'm sorry but that is absolutely ridiculous. "Farting" and/or "aiding the obesity problems by eating a donut" are so far off the base of what we're discussing, it's absurd. These are multi million dollar operations. And *you* have the choice to not eat a donut as you have a choice to not buy a knock-off. difference is, the only one sufferring the consequences of the donut binge, is you who ate it, not so, with the purchase/selling of counterfeit goods.

Al, it only gets serious to some people when it hits their wallets (or purses). If you are in the entertainment business and don't take intellectual property issues seriously, I hope you enjoy a long and happy life in community theater or as a street mime.
Stop worrying about what I'm doing -- focus instead on what you're eating.

re: The Purse Obsession

I know it's going too far, that's why I posted it. I just wish, for once on this board, we could have a discussion, such as purses, without involving politics. Some people buy knockoffs, some people don't. But can't there just be a frivolous discussion on one girls purse addiction? I understand some people feel passionately about how the money is going to organized crime, and I agree, it's not the best place to spend our money. Organized crime has been around for years, and they will continue to survive, and not because anyone bought a fake Louis Vuitton.

I think we should worry more about gas consumption and where that money goes.

What is this supposed to mean? Frankly I think how one spends their money or whether or not he/she thinks it is alright to buy a fake purse is completly irrelevant to whether or not he/she will be a sucessful actor. Last time I checked they don't ask you at an audition what your views on the illegal sales of purses are. And if they are asking then let me know at which auditions so I can make sure not to go. In my humble opinion it is talent, drive, and determination that makes one a sucess - not purses. Its ridiculous to think otherwise.

Ditto.

re: The Purse Obsession

EVERYTHING in life comes down to one type of politics or another.

And the stealing of intellectual property "copyright infringement" is an issue looked at when you go to auditions. Everything is looked at.

I know...why spoil a good thread. People just want to have mindless *fun*.

re: The Purse Obsession

They do not check at auditions to see if you own any fake bags, have burned cds, or any other forms of "copyright infringment" for that matter. they don't care. they care about you bringing in the money. Filling the seats. I honestly think if Kristin Chenoweth has 1,000 fake purses and flaunts them in front of everyone she sees no one will care. The producers aren't suddenly going to stop casting her. It's totally irrelevant to the entire casting process.
