The 1993 musical by Jule Styne with Music was by Jule Styne book by playwright Marsha Norman and lyrics were by Marcia Norman and Paul Stryker. Choreography was by Lar Lubovitch and the direction was by film director Stanley Donen (who's only Broadway credit was as a 16-year-old dancer in the original Pal Joey at the Barrymore Theatre). Mr. Styne's score re-used some old tunes from other shows which didn't fare well either. It was a big disaster and not the final triumph we would have wished for Jule Styne.

I saw this for the first time last night. Sublime.
Powell and Pressburger have never been better. And Moira Shearer is simply amazing.
One of my favorite movies...
Unfortunate Broadway musical version--Jules Styne's last work.

I haven't seen it but Powell and Pressburger are AWESOME!
The Red Shoes is brilliant and haunting.
See it for these reasons:
The wonderful ballet scenes. The Red Shoes Ballet is choreographed by Robert Helpmann, who in addition to appearing as a principle in this film, also played the Child Catcher in the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
See it for the incredible rare beauty and talent of Moira Shearer.
See it for the artistry of legendary cinematographer Jack Cardiff. Together with the Academy Award-winning art direction, you won't believe your eyes.
And HEAR it for the gorgeous, Oscar-winning original music score by Brian Easdale. It's as much a feast for the ears as it is for the eyes.
It's a fascinating, deeply intense story about the struggle for artistic perfection and how it can affect our lives.
I think one of the most interesting artistic choices is during the Red Shoes ballet P&P used several camera techniques to aid the story of the ballet (cross fades, super-imposed backgrounds, etc).
I wonder why they didn't simply film the it as the audience would have seen it, like the ballet in An American In Paris.
Thoughts?
Well, I don't think either were filmed as the audience would have seen it, but the Red Shoes Ballet goes much further into surrealism.
I think we're seeing what's going on in her mind. Not what's going on in the theatre on that stage. The incredible shot of the conductor walking right up out of the orchestra pit and dissolving into her leading man sums that up for me visually.
This is a filmed ballet with the intent of capturing the emotion of the dancers, not with capturing their performances.
It's about what they're feeling, not what they're doing, in other words.
Well said. I got a similar impression. And that shot from her POV when the audience becomes an ocean with the composer standing in front is stunning.
And yes, the music is beautiful.
I want to see it again now.
