Talking to my Republican brother about this and I tihnk he may have stumbled upon the motive for this: "Well, we need people to start dying off so social security isn't ravaged."

From Wikipedia:
President Bush has nicknamed Nelson "The Benator." Originally, Bush nicknamed him "Nellie," but Nelson jokingly complained that he would prefer a "tougher" nickname.
I guess "Nellie" is better than "Turd Blossom," Bush's astonishing nickname for Karl Rove.

And I thought I despised Republican Senators before.
This is just f*cking arg...I can't even find the words. I hope this fails miserably and those who are supporting it have hell to pay because of it!

well hopefully when Democrats take over congress this year that they can overturn the decision if one is made in favor of this. It's just insane that anyone would WANT people to die, because that's basically what this is! Not only is it detremental to the person, it's horror for the insurance agencies. Like I said we push all sorts of prevention to our customers because in the long run it saves us oodles of money in lengthy treatments and hospital stays. I don't know of any insurance agencies that would WANT this to pass.

Brilliant, Calvin!
Unbelievable. I can't believe Wayne Allard is behind this. Wait...I can believe that, but I can't believe this is sponsored by a Colorado senator. I guess that mean the Colorado vote is f**ked, huh?

Here the email you can add to on the American Cancer Society site:
Re: Oppose S. 1955 and Protect Mammograms
Dear Senator ___________:
I am writing you to express my concern about the Small Business Health Plan ( S. 1955) legislation, and to ask you to oppose any bill that fails to protect insurance coverage for lifesaving mammograms and other vital cancer screenings and treatments.
I am deeply concerned that S. 1955 will undermine important patient protections and hamper efforts to prevent, detect and treat cancer. Early detection of cancer is the key to saving lives, especially with the use of mammograms to detect breast cancer. By allowing insurance plans to be exempt from covering cancer screenings, access to mammograms, colorectal cancer screenings and pap smears, along with insurance coverage of off-label prescription drugs and participation in clinical trials would be in jeopardy.
S. 1955 is fundamentally flawed in its approach to insurance reform. S. 1955 is a federal takeover of insurance regulation that would remove state insurance coverage guarantees for a wide range of critical benefits and services that are now part of every insurance policy. I am also opposed to encouraging bare bones insurance plans that would be a step backward for anyone now protected by state guarantees of essential benefits. S. 1955 is a retreat from preventive health measures and quality treatment that saves lives and dollars and it cannot be fixed.
For the first time in 70 years, the number of cancer deaths has declined, due in very large part to these screenings and treatments. Please help ensure that we stay on the right track by opposing S. 1955 and any bill that that fails to ensure these crucial protections for cancer patients. I look forward to hearing your position on the bill and how you are going to stand up to protect cancer screenings and treatments.
Sincerely,

Yikes.
Thanks for the heads-up.
I sent emails to my senators, but I know that at least one of mine will be once again going against his party on this one (Sen. Specter- the same senator who recently beat cancer himself). I'm only going to be a Pa resident for a bit longer.
What scares me even more is the implications about hiring someone with a serious illness. This goes against the ADA in many ways since persons with serious illnesses (we're not forced to disclose except for health insurance paperworks) are going to be "outed" during interviews and not hired if they're going to make the insurance policies go crazy.

Just reading this thread has made me nauseous.
.... I hope it's not anything fatal. Apparently insurance will no longer cover anything that could kill you.

Posted: 5/5/06 at 1:34amI just shipped off an email to Ken Salazer. I don't see the point of sending one to Allard, seeing as how he's a f**king sponsor of the bill...

This is unbelievable. I find it hard to believe that this could happen in the
U.S.A. All hell would break loose if such a proposal were to be tabled here in Australia, but then again the U.S. doesn't have legalised abortion in all States either? Does it?

All proposed legislation is transparently available through the Library of Congress.
All you have to do is google S.1955
Here's the link
