Anyone have a favorite costume or setting? My fave costume-Cinderella's wedding dress. I liked it more than her ball gown. Fave scenery-the crypt. Cinderella's downstairs dwelling is neat, too. My inner NYer jells on the square footage and working fireplace. :)

My favorite set is the outside of the castle going into the ball, with the carriages pulling up. And that three-story staircase outside. I love the lighting of it, too.

And ... SPOILER, so Diva better stop reading until he's seen the movie, because it made me gasp the first time ...

No, really, SPOILER * * * * * * * *

My favorite costume is actually the four dresses Cinderella wears for her ball gown in the escape sequence when she leaves the prince at midnight. That's actually my favorite sequence in the movie, and it's all done without any special effects. With each shot as she runs down the flights of stairs, her dress gets slightly darker and her hair gets longer and changes color. All with the rose petals falling and blowing around her.

So fantastic. I remember I was stunned when she got to the bottom of the steps and was wearing her rags again. It was a brilliant idea and beautifully executed. It's still such an effective sequence, even when you look for it and know it's coming.

I forgot about that sequence--yes, it's amazing. They conveyed a lot with each 'look' and editing. It's probably all the more stunning in the blu-ray.

The site that shall not be named has the entire movie in parts. The entire ball sequence may be there, but I'm not 100% sure.

If it is there, I'm sure it's beautiful.

Here's the sequence I mentioned in the SPOILER above (cued up in the link to the right time) ... followed by the Oscar-nominated song "When He Danced With Me."

EDIT: And it looks a thousand times better on a big screen, restored, in HD.

Watching it again now, I definitely see the symbolism of the "slipper" and the "rose," especially after the explanation that the rose is a symbol of the royals and royalty.

Especially when things don't go right for Cinderella after the prince falls in love with her, and the king forbids their marriage because she is a commoner. (And he needs a royal alliance for political reasons.)

The slipper is the fairy tale. The romance. The magic.

The rose is the legacy and the obligation. The reality.

It's not a perfect movie, and it drags a bit. Still, I wouldn't cut anything. I love it. It takes its time and tells a a familiar story in a lavishly beautiful way.

Never thought of it that way, that's a great insight, best12bars. A lot of stories have duality as a theme. In Cinderella, there's the pull between obligation and romance, Cinderella's two identities (i.e. Incognita), Edward saying "why can't I be two people?"

Side note, when the fairy godmother says, "I'm a...fairy godmother. Have been all my life. And please don't ask how I got into it. Because it's a long story, highly improbable, and I sometimes wish we'd never been invented." I'm like, someone make a sequel called 'The Highly Improbable Story of the Fairy Godmother', please.

That would be great!

When I first saw the movie in the theatre (back in 1977 in the U.S., a year after its release in the UK), they had edited out several things, including verses of songs and the fairy godmother's "office" scene. When I first saw it on the DVD, it surprised me, and I wasn't sure I liked it. The U.S. edit was definitely tighter, and this movie does tend to drag a bit. Now I love the office scene, and it made me wonder about her life as well (writing the Arabian Nights tales for Scheherazade, etc.). Plus I love Annette Crosbie.

Amazing! What a beautiful film! Everything looked stunning!

I can't understand why it wasn't shown on TV more often?!

I agree the Blu-ray looks and sounds wonderful.

Here's another example of the work of the talented THE SLIPPER AND THE ROSE choreographer, Marc Breaux. Bobby Banas, who also worked with Breaux on MARY POPPINS, steals the spotlight.

The music isn't as nice either. I tried to get Amazon to overnight me a new copy but they wouldn't. I'll have it on Monday.

At least my copy of "Olivia & Errol" arrived.

I love this movie! It kind of always bugged me that the story took place in the 1700s, but the fairy godmother kept referring to Hans Christian Andersen, The Little Mermaid, and The Ugly Duckling, which all didn't happen until the 19th century.

I, too, preferred Cinderella's wedding gown to her ballgown.

Also, apparently there is a novelization of the film, which gives extended details about the plot. I've only read the first page online, and it's pretty fascinating. Cinderella's father was a rich merchant, whose life was full of woe (because his wife died). The stepmother had longed thirsted for his fortune, and once the opportunity came, she trapped him into marriage. That's just from the first page, so imagine how much other details the rest of the book contained.

One of my favorite lines from the film: It's the same with Snow White. All the same, you young girls. Never do as you're told. Men are MUCH easier.

A few questions I have about the movie:

1. What was the game that the royal family played in the beginning?
2. Where was Cinderella exiled to? For some reason, I always thought it was Rome because of the painting that was shown right before "I Can't Forget the Melody."
3. When the portrait of Edward was being shown to the princesses, why did one faint and why were the royal guards killed?
4. Is it just me or was "When He Danced with Me" shot during the day time?

I think there is a mention of where Cinderella is exiled in the dialogue between the King and the High Chamberlain (before he talks to her). Something about her being cared for just outside their borders. They don't really say where Euphrania is (since it's a make-believe kingdom in Europe), but they also mention Carelsford as the country they are most anxious to form an alliance with, so maybe it's there.

Or Passaic, perhaps. Or maybe Detroit.

EDIT: By the way, one of my favorite scenes in the movie is when the High Chamberlain (Kenneth More) explains to Cinderella (Gemma Craven) why she can't marry the prince. The acting and dialogue in that scene are excellent. Very understated, especially for a fantasy.

Cinderella's potion of "When He Danced with Me" was clearly shot in the daytime.

The Fairy Godmother's references to other fairy tales doesn't bother me. She knows all the stories because she will eventually either tell them to the author (HC ANdersen) or work them out, just the way she is with Cinderella. It ain't Cambridge University Press History of Euphrenia, after all.

I assume one princess fainted because Edward is so gorgeous. And the messengers were shot because the country they were visiting was hostile to Edward's father and didn't care that they were looking for a marriage alliance.

I really do LOVE this movie. If they have bothered to reissue it on Blu-Ray, they should put out a re-issue of the novelization as a tie-in.
