I bet if it were now, they would have shown a shot of Ethel Merman during Mary Martin's speech just for the sake of creating drama.

It used to be just the medallion, SM2. It wasn't mounted on a stand (looking more like a spinning gong) until years later. It was presented in a case, back then.
