i remember seeing this on HBO a few years back and i loved it. i finally got it today for christmas. it made me remember why i loved it. its such a great movie, in my opinion anyway.
anyone else love this movie?
We had to watch it as a part of our religion class my senior year of high school. It was one of 2 movies I actually liked.
i love that movie. they made it into a musical...it's interesting...very different

BUMP
yes, ive heard the music from the musical. ive heard the ending is totally different though. i do like how they take so many lines right from the movie and use them when they fit. i thought that was a great idea.
The movie is one of my favorite films. The Musical starred a friend of mine, Garrett Long, and she was fantastic in the lead role. It is a beautiful story. I wish the play had been more of a commercial success, and could have played longer in the city.

do you think percy's monologue about how she killed her father and why would be good to use for an audition at some point depending on the show?
sure, why not? I know a lot of actors who take their audition material from film scripts.

I think I actually prefer the musical to the movie. The ending is more believable and more humane.
The only thing I found pretty silly in the movie is Hannah's homeless son. Not the fact that he's homeless or anything, just that...he's dressed like...big foot? I dont know hahah, but he looks pretty crazy.
um, he was a war refugee, who had been terribly scarred emotionally by his fighting experience, and lived alone in the woods. What would you expect him to look like?

that was the 1 thing i didnt understand. did he return home without anybody knowing and then he chose living by himself b/c war destroyed him emotionally?
that and when percy says "i can't have kids no more joe." did she mean that she cant go through the possibility of another miscarriage or is she actually infertile?
I think your first question is definitely a yes answer, but the second could be either of your possibilities. I'm not sure if there is a book that the film is based upon, but if there is, the answers would be there.

i just checked, theres no book. but thanks for the help. i guess they just leave us to wonder and answer the question ourselves. either answer adds depth to Percy.

well i know hes a war refugee and all, i just thought his costume was really silly. it looked too much like they tried to make him homeless.

I seem to remember Hannah saying (in the musical) that Eli deserted the army, and when he came home, the shame of what he had done caused Hannah's husband to die of grief, which also finished off Eli emotionally (and caused him to take to the woods). Hannah knows he is there (she leaves him food) but even she can't bring herself to try to reach out to him until Percy forces the issue.
Also, didn't Percy miscarry because her stepfather beat her up late in the pregnancy, and that is why she can't have any more children (he also kidnapped her from the hospital before she recovered.)
This is the ONLY movie to date that has made me cry.. VERY weird.

roquat, thats what i meant about percys baby. miscarriage was just the word that came to mind.
so it was the injuries she sustained that makes her infertile, right?
EDIT: Broadway_Bound_Star, this movie made me cry so hard, even the second time around.

Yes, that was the impression I got. The injuries, and the shock and fear of being abducted from the hospital in her wounded state.
It's a fearsome monologue, on stage and screen. The woman I saw do it in the musical (a regional production) was unbelievable. She worked in an organization that helps battered woman, so she had plenty of experience to draw on...

oh, wow. the monologues the same in the stage production?

shamelessly bumping once again, hehe.
"There is a Balm in Gilead..."
Love this movie. Burstyn, Harden, and Eliot give amazing performances.
I've never seen the movie, but I once saw the musical. I greatly enjoyed the music.

the end to the musical is very different, but its so good.

Yes, the monologue is the same. They didn't try to musicalize it, which I think was the right choice. It comes a little earlier than it does in the movie though.
Another change--Caleb isn't as villainous. We see more of what made him what he is.
