"The Stepford Wives" (the book) -Help!

So, I read The Stepford Wives a little while ago and really, really liked it (aside from the fact that it creeped me out). BUT, I am a bit confused as to what actually happens at the end.

*SPOILERS*
Do they actually kill the wives and replace them with robot women, or is it something else?

Any insight would be appreciated!

Honey, I can't help you because I read that book in the 70s when I was in junior high. I had to post because I haven't thought about that in decades.

It's been years since I read it, but I believe that's right, EDG.
"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

"Joanna! How could you do a thing like that! When I was just going to make some coffee!"

I love the book and the film (original) I was so creeped at the end!
