So, this local theatre did Miss Saigon a few months or so back. I found out from the stage manager for the theatre that this production cost about $400,000 (More or less), and they had a New York actor come all the way out to Cali to get Chris...he got it. They actually had a HUGE helicopter on the set. (The blades actually spun.) They are doing Flower Drum Song next...I am going to see it. They will probably about 10,000 set pieces. It's the only way the theatre holds up. Costume, prop, and set rentals. Not ticket sales. Although I think they did a great job with Saigon. They should've.

If a theatre builds really good sets and costumes, they can make lots of money renting them out.
Music Theatre International now has a service where if you are looking for sets, costumes or even one specific prop for one of their shows (Like, for example, the barber chair for Sweeney Todd), they will put you in touch with a theatre that has the item for rent.
