Time opting to profile La Coulter right now is odd. But what's odder is their bait "...She is quite possibly the most divisive figure in the public eye. But love her or hate her, you don't know the real Ann Coulter." Interesting, since the piece goes on to suggest that in fact, you absolutely DO know the real Anne. Perhaps this cover was inevitable -- last year we had the summer of Michael Moore.
But she is, to my thinking, more than merely "divisive." Start with "...Liberals howl about McCarthyism. I say, let's give them some. It's time for a new McCarthyism." "We need to excute people like John Walker Lindh in order to physically intimidate liberals." and "Think we ought to nuke North Korean right now just to give the rest of the world a warning. Boom! I just think it would be fun to nuke them and let it be a warning to the rest of the world..." This from a gal who proudly takes friends to an Evangelical church in Manhattan. Call me quirky, Anne, I like my Christians to at least follow in the footsteps of their Savior. The idea that a woman who runs around wanting to nuke anybody -- and says "why not blood for oil, oil is important" is tapping into a sizeable part of the populace still scares the hell out of me.

One of our more respected posters has claimed that this persona of hers is basically an act. However, that doesn't have anything to do with the number of people that actually respond to it - which, as you say, is VERY frightening.
And Because she lives "on white wine and cigarettes," and abides in NYC, the reddest city in the country, and likes to watch drag queens in the Halloween parade, we're supposed to see her as "complicated." The only thing startling that I learned about her you can see on the cover, as you reel at the sight of her legs: the poor woman has some serious anorexia issues.
I think she's a raging, closeted bull-dyke.
Come out, Ann, it'll change your life!
That said, and all humor aside, I read her website weekly. She scares the crap out of me. But I read her because it's important to know what people like her are saying...and perhaps the most disturbing thing out of it all - new McCarthyism, torture and execution, nuclear bombing as a means of coercion - the most frightening thing she and people like Sean Hannity are propagating on the US populace is the equation of liberalism with evil. Yeah, not even just wrong, but EVIL.
And that scares me because people where I come from believe that.
Amen, Bwaysinger. That's absolutely the most frightening part. It's not a disagreement about the country, it's THEIR country, period, and we are all traitors. That is where her glib pledge of new McCarthyism is more than sound bite. The fact that it's also now tied to "moral values" and religious fervor only doubles the HANDMAIDS TALE like nightmare.
Somebody I've come to know quite well recently has had the "pleasure" of working with her in the past and she assures me that this is how she really is. She amuses me, though. I've got all her books and subscribe to her column online. She's always good for a laugh or two.
Auggie, ever read any of her writings? She discusses how she goes to McCarthy's grave and leaves flowers to honor this true American.
Frightening. Absolutely frightening. For people like Ann Coulter, there is no room in this world for anyone who disagrees with her one iota.
I think my favorite thing about her, though, is how she whines about liberals engaging in personal attacks because they don't know how to debate...by engaging in personal attacks. It's pretty fun.

I too loathe Ann. I found the Time profile to be astoundingly biased: They mention that her detractors accuse her of mountains of errors, remark that a Google search "Ann Coulter Lies" produced thousands of responses but dismiss it all with "She's pretty accurate" while investigating two incidents where, yes indeed, she was completely wrong. Time, how did you let this story run without even the most basic editing?
She is an awful awful person. This week's column (Yes I read it faithfully--know thine enemy indeed) is all about how appalled she is that liberals dare to toss pies at her and other conservatives. She talks about how she's stalked by pie-ers and how she has multible "Bone breaking" bodyguards...to defend her from a facefull of custard. One is reminded that Ann's suggestion for dealing with people who she disagrees with is almost always death. After the Kansas City Bombing she wished that he'd parked in front of the New York TImes building instead. When given a chance to qualify that, to assure people she didn't want anyone dead she did indeed soften her hate: She'd want janitors & other workers to clear out before the bomb went off so that only NYT editors & reporters would be killed.
Charming.
Yeah, she's been scaring the crap out of me since I first saw her on Politically Incorrect and refered to her as that crazy blonde woman. I really want to think that it's all an act, but I'm not so sure that it is.
Ack! The Handmaid's Tale, a wonderful book I recommend to everyone, is becoming scarier and scarier. Parts of it really ring true now. Would that mean that Ann Coulter=Serena Joy?
oh, for a little change of pace...
I think I'm buying the manpanties.
I Love Karl Rove
Yes, Joek99. Interesting, isn't it, how she can glibly toss of lines about bombers destroying liberal institutions, and then bellyache about a liberal professor talking about the dead in the WTC. Her hate-speak is always supposed to be justified. As a proponent of the culture of life, she's filled with violence-promoting imagery and death wishes. But that's the other craw-sticking aspect of her: that she's a self-identified "intellectual." A woman who says "liberals love America the way OJ loved Nicole." It's not even a good line.
She (and many conservatives) are hypocrites. They whine and bitch about all the things liberals do--but do the SAME things themselves!
And, I thought it was scarily true when Bill Maher pointed out that TIME magazine will now be known as JESUS WEEKLY (or whatever title he gave it). They do WAYYYYYY too many cover stories on Jesus and Mary and the Bible lately. Now a biased piece on Coulter? Liberal Media my ass!
Well, Time does tend to be the conservative weekly news magazine to begin with.
As for whether it is all an act, the profiler didn't seem to think so. Regardless, she has influence, and that is truly frightening!

Whatever. I'm tired of wasting my energy on taking people like Republican Barbie seriously. Time can go ahead and profile her bony ass; I'm not listening. I just don't have the energy.
