You people call it a soap opera like that's a bad thing!
It's heartfelt, beautiful, and the final confrontation is worthy of the 40s Woman's Picutre. I still love the movie for its "soapiness." It was supposed to be a glossy entertainment, not a post-Feminist tract. On its own terms, it delivers, and documents some equisite dancing by ballet stars at the height of their powers. By the way -- its out of print in DVD. I asked recently at Barnes and Noble.
