I thought the movie was more interesting than the genre trappings (though they were well enough served), and especially appreciated how layered and dimensional the two children were, right on the page of the script. It's a fright show, with cheap shocks, to be sure. Some cheaper than others. But Shyamalan digs beneath the archetypes -- and iconic (cliched) Hansel and Gretel framework -- to explore children of divorce with some genuinely thoughtful and fresh ways. These kids are bright, articulate and unlike most in movies and TV, complicated and worth 90 minutes of our time. And Hahn and especially our first (and still definitive) Violet Weston, the fierce and fearless -- and may I say, subtle, camera considerate -- Deanna Dunagan, are quite effective. I'd never oversell this movie, but it's quite a ride, and it's smart in unexpected ways.
