I, unlike the Tea Partiers who hate America and see nothing but dark days ahead, think that America can do anything it puts its mind to. Republicans DO NOT want budget surpluses- they want deficits so they can demand government be shrunk down so it can be drowned in a bathtub. When we DID have a surplus (only 10 years ago) they were so horrified they GAVE IT AWAY-- remember all those checks for $300 a person until it was all gone?
If you returned tax rates to what they were under Clinton, we could pay this debt down in a decade- not that we want to, but we could. Go back to the tax rates of the 50's and we'd have to build warehouses to store all the surplus.

Posted: 8/1/11 at 2:00pmI'm not usually a fan of Maureen Dowd, but her op-ed today seems to sum it up. It appears that those who supposedly hate government (ie Tea Partiers) are better at it than those who supposedly love government (Dems).

Posted: 8/1/11 at 3:11pmOne need look no further then the Koch Brothers to see who is behind this B.S.! They are supporting the Tea Party selling them on the idea of smaller government and no tax hikes yet are profiting BIG time from working to overthrow EPA laws for manufacturing, destroying Unions and keeping the taxes down on the wealthiest 5 %.

Apparently I know how to pick 'em as the two members of Congress I worked for, and either caucus or are in the Democratic party, voted no. This deal was ridiculous and I cannot believe that even after the shutdown threat that the Congress yet again were allowed to show their recent tendencies toward a banana republic. Congrats on your 5 week vacation, Congress! Well-deserved.
As much as I think PR-wise, this hurts Boehner and the Republicans being seen as unable to handle the forces within their own party and turning every piece of legislation into a soap opera, I do not enjoy thinking that the working poor and elderly get screwed yet again.
