Does anyone else remember this? It's got Aileen Quinn as Dorothy, and is a decently done film.

I bought this from amazon a year ago because I remembered it from my childhood... it's kinda cheesy, but nostalgic to me.

I have it on VHS still, and a friend transferred it to DVD for me. It's actually a fairly decent film...and the songs (Music by Sammy Cahn) are quite good.
Never heard of it. Must check it out.

I much prefer the 1986 TV series also from Japan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wonderful_Wizard_of_Oz_%28anime%29
I wish they'd actually release the full series on DVD (they currently only have a highly edited four disc version where they condense the 52 episodes down to 4 'movies' respectively based on the 4 OZ books represented in the series.

I have those too, and they are pretty amazing. I didn't have HBO as a kid, so I've never seen the full versions. They are available, but your two language options are Mandarin Chinese and French.
That said, I will gladly admit that I have the songs from both versions on my iPod. (If anyone wants them, let me know)
I don't think I ever saw this anime movie. I did see part of the Japanese series when it ran on HBO (narrated by Margot Kidder), and I couldn't get into it at all. It seemed "joyless" for lack of a better immediate word.
I remember the 1990 Saturday morning American cartoon that ran as well. The one derived solidly from the MGM film, at least as far as appearance goes. It brought the Wicked Witch of the West back to life as Dorothy's nemesis. I liked that one quite a bit, even if I only saw a few episodes. I thought it was very well done.

The DIC series from 1990 is on DVD too! (All but 2 episodes, and one of those is on VHS). I used to get up early on Saturday morning to watch it on ABC.

I have great memories of those show as a kid. Granted I was seven and it was 1987 morning television for me (that, 80s Astroboy, Belle & Sebastian (the show, not the freaking band!) and Vicky the Viking - the shows I always watched before going to school). Childhood shows granted may not hold up as well as one likes as an adult I have to admit.
I refuse to buy the edited 'movie' DVDs period. It is either the full 52 episodes or Bust. Or actually take those lessons at the Alliance Francais which I have been saying I will do forever now.
I enjoyed that series simply because as a young kid it opened up OZ to me (before that it was really just the 1939 movie and 'Return to Oz').
Oh well. You gotta love childhood memories at anyrate. :)

I got into the 87 series on VHS, I had no idea that there *was* more, so I don't feel much of a loss. However, from the friend who has the full version, there isn't much that is missing. I really wish the Parachute Club would have put the songs the performed on the series (three more were written for the VHS releases) on one of their CDs. I hate that one of them has a snippet of the story at the start.
The 1982 was on Disney a few times, but it was sold at McDonald's as a promotional video. I think I have 2 or 3 copies that varying relatives purchased for me.
These cartoons, the MGM film and Disney pretty much ruled my life until about the 6th Grade.
My aunt Sue had this and gladly passed it on to me. I was happy when I realized who Aileen Quinn was.
This is my favorite version:
