No, it wasn't RENT or THE PRODUCERS.

I'm talking about MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS. It certainly deserved to win the Golden Globe for Best Musical and/or Comedy over WALK THE LINE.

And Dame Judi Dench deserved the Oscar more than Reese Witherspoon.

The movie has an inspiring message: A few naked boobies and bottoms make any producton number better.

That was the theme of the movie, wasn't it? Or am I missing something? The best movie musical of 2005

WALK THE LINE was not a musical and neither was MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS. They were movies with music. There is a difference.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

And Mrs Henderson was barely that.

I can't wait till I make my musical, but tell me what is the diff. between a musical and movie with music being sung in numerous scenes?

A movie musical is a film in which the characters sing songs to tell a story - equivilent to Broadway's "book musical."

A movie with music is a film in which the characters (or background music) sing songs that have nothing to do specifically with the film's plot - sort of equivilent to Broadway's "jukebox musical."

Well if you can imagine it happening in real life then it's a movie with music in it. If people randomly burst into song and everyone is in perfect choreography (not spelled right I know) then it's a musical.

So - by your standard, the film version of CABARET was not a musical - since all the songs were performed onstage at the KitKat Klub - except for the one sung in the beer garden.

I fell asleep watching CABARET so I couldn't say. But I did see CABARET on stage and that's a book musical.

I think the distinctions are kind of blurry. I know you were talking about movie musicals, but by capnhook's criteria, wouldn't you be able to argue that Jersey Boys is a play with music (since all of the songs were pretty much presented either in the group's performances/recording studio, etc)???

My "criteria" was very basic. There are exceptions, of course.

WALK THE LINE is not one of them. All the songs were not originally written for a single specific story. And in the film, the songs were not used to tell a specific story...per se. They are placed in there for historical reasons - the film tells the story of Johnny Cash's life, and the songs were part of his life. But they didn't all tell a story - the same story.

Make sense? I can't write it clearly...

I know, and I get it, CapnHook. Really, I was just being difficult. But...what about Jersey Boys. If it was filmed, book etc, as is, would it be a musical or a movie with music? And I think the Cabaret question was pretty valid as well. I don't think anyone would really argue that it's not a movie musical, but its music is basically all contained within the cabaret performances.

I just don't think it's necessarily that black and white.

MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS was not a musical. Not even close, you've got to be kidding.

Yes, I thought it was better than WALK THE LINE, but neither of them are musicals.

Out of the two movie musicals that opened this year, THE PRODUCERS was undoubtedly better.

What about JESUS IS MAGIC? I haven't seen it, but I was told this was a musical...? And also OPEN HOUSE.
