"Making it on Broadway"
i know they have a thread goin' on in the main msg board.. but i wanted to bring it here...
what do you all think of it?
i'm at the middle.. and was at a depressing (or boring?) part (for me at least), and the song "someday is for suckers" from The Life came on the radio at the same time.... geez how much lower can that get.... haha.. [edit] okie that sounded bad.. not that i want to be a prostitue by any means, but the whole "striving" of the song. alright. just had to clear that up. ^^

Haven't read it yet, but I am really looking forward to getting around to reading it.
I started the other thread!:) I ordered it off amazon.com like 2 weeks ago and when I got it I read it in like 3 hours. I found it very interesting, but yes, scary at the same time. I was also angry at some parts, like the Les Mis chorus members not caring anymore and not trying, etc. I'd love to be in Les Mis! So that made me mad that people were taking advantage of it or so it sounded. The main thing that scared me (and this is lame!) is the whole cockroaches in the apartments deal, because I HATE bugs of any kind. So therefore I need a place to live in NY w/o cockroaches...possible hopefully?
It didn't change my mind though, in fact I think I'm more excited now than I was because I saw what these people had to go through and yet they still love it, and that's just so touching. If I make just one Broadway show in the most miniscule part in the chorus or whatever, I'll be proud of myself, and the more I think of that the more I realize that's something I need to do for myself.
So yeah, sorry, rambling over. It's an EXCELLENT book in my opinion, and I reccommend it to anyone interested in musical theatre either as a career or just an audience member because it gives you a whole new outlook and appreciation for the art of MT:)

haha hi cindy. i'm going to ramble too! i agree with you that it's an excellent book.. well so far at least.. i was CRACKiNG UP at the chapter where they told about their on and offstage mistakes.. just absolutely died. haha! and the cockroaches.. yes that can be quite scary when you hate bugs.. but for me.. the chapter where it talked about family and the business being your entirrre life scared me the most (so far..). thinking about how even AFTER you land the roles... in the end.. who are you going to be with?.. *scary*..
hmm.... but some parts were just dumb. i mean, there were parts in that book where i just was thinking "shut up" to the actors that were speaking co'z sometimes they'd be talking about the individuality of broadway.. well yeah it's gotten corporate, yeah YOU aren't the star anymore.. it's about the show.
SO WHAT?
they still get to act on a broadway stage, sing, and do their thing. so who cares if the show is not centered on your freaking ego? i dunno.. that got me upset at how selfish that certain chapter was. maybe it was there to wake those people up that go for broadway for the fame. o_O but isn't it obvious already? haha..
but getting back to it being a good book (haha). there have been many times that it made think.. and re-think that life. it really gets at you. co'z we think sometimes, "yeah even if i get to be in the chorus... i'll be so happy and fulfilled...." but there's people who've been there and done that and just are hopeless and unhappy. you start to wonder if it's just THEM and they weren't fit for it in the first place.. or is it that you are being too "dreamy" like they were...? so i think that's great that it's that tiny hit of reality.
but in saying all that depressing stuff, i like to think of what Brad Oscar said. When he thought about that stuff, he often had to remind himself, "You are working on Broadway. You area living your dreams." it's true. ya gotta struggle sometimes! ^^ life isn't always as peachy.
