The cheapest accommodation in Manhattan that's also safe and of an acceptable standard..? Twin room, within walking/taxi distance of theaters.
Cheers.
Your best bet is priceline.com or hotwire.com. The last time I visited NYC I stayed at the Sheraton NY for $80/night. You should book a place just to have it in case you can't find anything cheaper. Then, periodically check hotwire.com for great rates. There is a website called Bidding for Travel that tells you what people have gotten recently on Priceline/Hotwire and the hotel names are disclosed based on the number of stars and amenities on hotwire.

I also agree with the Priceline suggestion.
Some of the other options which are around US$140
Milford Plaza
Travel Inn
review "Bidding for travel" BEFORE priceline -- it is a great forum and lets you know what has gone for how much as well as what hotel typically come up in each neighborhood....NEVER blindly go into priceline....

The Milford is horrific! Loud, smelly tiny rooms!
Shop around! My new favorite place is the Quality just off TImes square on 48th-- across from the Palace stage door. You can get a SUITE for $129 if you catch them in the right mood.
Otherwise, show up and look around Port Authority for someone to give you a place to stay!

disgusting but cheap - the Y
that's right...the Y.
it's cheap for a reason.
My friend stayed at the Y and she said it was fine....but she did sleep with ear plugs!!!
that would be my partners' mothers place in Peter Cooper Village........The woman has lived there for almost 50 years...not THAT'S rent control!
