The story goes:

Anna Moffo, at the peak of her career, was one unhappy gal.

Famous all over the world. A major TV show in Italy. Huge successes in America. Lots of recordings. A big, big Star!

The pressure became too much.

She was treated with sulfur drugs for depression and, to her regret, mixed them with some champagne through the course of the day.

Now remember, this wasn't just any day. This was a live Saturday afternoon radio broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera.

By the time she got to the Mad Scene, she was stoned and on her ass. Rudolph Bing was in the wings ready to ring the curtain down. All of the Met Administration held their breaths....
