I'm looking for a truly amazing song...
I'm a high alto to a mezzo soprano
during a previous production...I sang "Come To Your Senses" from Tick Tick Boom and I am in love with that song!
what are songs that have great meaning?
Back to Before from Ragtime comes to mind. Really, just take a look at the entire Ragtime score. Whispering from Spring Awakening also might be a good choice. Possibly, No One is Alone from Into the woods, but that might be a little high.
"Dividing Day" from The Light in the Piazza comes to mind, although it's written for an older woman. I'd say either of Clara's big solos ("The Beauty Is" and "The Light in the Piazza") but they might be high, depending on your range.
"Stars and the Moon" from Songs for a New World
"Maybe I Like It This Way" from Lippa's The Wild Party
"Unexpected Song" from Song and Dance/Tell Me on a Sunday (at least the TMOAS version that doesn't go up at the end)
And lately, a favorite of mine has been "Breathe" from In The Heights.
I love Ragtime...how about Your Daddy's Son
No one is alone from ITTW is my favorite song.
Once again, a song written for an older woman - "Another Winter in a Summer Town" from Grey Gardens.
"Yes, the brutalities of progress are called revolutions. When they are over, men recognize that the human race has been harshly treated but it has moved forward." - Les Miserables
When Hope Goes from The Spitfire Grill
Pretty much anything by Scott Alan (though not actually from a musical). He has a true gift of the musical language.
"For Good" comes to mind.
You Don't Know This Man from Parade is always nice. There's also a lot of great songs in John and Jen. Andrew Lippa has a way with words and music.
Times Like This from Lucky Stiff? hah.
If you are looking for songs that can be easily sung out of context of their parent musicals, then I second Light in the Piazza. Truly, "The Light in the Piazza" and "Dividing Day" are the most emotive and hauntingly beautiful songs ever.
EVER.
Also, if you want to go back, way back into the classics, "You'll Never Walk Alone" from Carousel would be a good one. It has a G in it though, so it may be a little high, but I'm a mezzo and I can sing it.
Also from Carousel, "If I loved You"
Contemporary, I too would go with "Back to Before" or "Twelve Children" from Dessa Rose...although it might help if you were black for that one... ;^D
"The Man That Got Away"- Gershwin

I Know Where I've Been- Hairpsray
It might not fit your range though
