I haven't seen it yet, but this is a well-written piece in the NYT.
Patriarchal attitudes?
The movie is very controversial with many proponents and detractors. This is far from the one dissenting opinion.
I saw it yesterday and LOVED the performances, especially by Adele Exarchopoulos. It's a crazy longshot, but she's up there with Blanchett, Delpy and Brie Larson for me, and I would love to see her remembered come Oscar time.
The three hour run time moved quickly and am still mulling over the characters and their actions.
One of the better movies of the year.
I kind of loved the movie. It's just so sensual and beautiful.
The one scene with the art collector talking about the female orgasm was definitely the most problematic in the way that it puts women up on a pedestal, like they're not even allowed to be human.
Still, I give the director credit for not skimping on the man on man kissing in the club, and for casting such beautiful men in the film. The whole thing could've just been "here's some hot girls scissoring away" but he understood that there could be different levels to the sensuality.
I can understand some of the criticisms of the sex scenes, but they worked for me. Not every lesbian likes exactly the same thing in bed. The sex felt raw and hot to me. It's certainly not some billowy curtains bullsh*t.
I find some of the good writing of the male gaze made this film too much of setting an example than what the film actually is which is about a girl growing up into a young woman. To me the most fascinating scenes were the moment she was bullied upon the discovery that she might be a lesbian, the scenes at school, and the party scenes where Adele is patterned after Louise Brooks.
I liked the film enough but Adele Exarchopoulos definitely has co-authorship on this film and deserves as much awards consideration of any performer this year.
This movie getting length complaints reminds me of The Wolf of Wall Street complaints because they have the same composing elements. To me scenes cannot simply be removed or cut down because the flow each scene in the two films are clearly organized from in such a manner that to 'tighten' either up ignores what both filmmakers are doing. Forget the controversies of both, aside from the fact both films feature both of the best lead performances of the year.
I need the soundtrack so bad. Fab bedroom music, if ya feel me.
