The trapped coal miners

I don't understand why coal miners didn't have some sort of tracking system in place to find trapped miners, especially after the Sago tragedy.

What a horrible decision to make--should they discontinue rescue efforts or continue to allow volunteers to continue to dig in hope of saving someone?

Cuz even satellites can't penetrate their beams through solid walls of rock?

I didn't know that.

I wonder if they survived the initial bump. The thought of them being left there to die is distressing.
