It was awesome. - theaterkid1015

Posted: 11/14/06 at 7:16pmThat implies that Michael Crichton's books aren't ****e in the first place.

The Firm
A Home at the End of the World
Great Expectations
Wuthering Heights
...and this one wasn't ruined because individually, it was a beautiful film...but it didn't capture the novel...Memoirs of a Geisha.

Posted: 11/14/06 at 7:42pmI think the first "of Mice and Men" book did a horrible job of transferring the book to film (I'm not sure, but I think they even gave Curley's Wife a name!), but the second one with Gary Sinise was a pretty good adaptation.

The only book I liked better than the movie was the Ya Ya Sisterhood. I couldn't even finish the book, but the movie is fun.
In 99% of the cases, the book is superior.

Oh, I FAR preferred the Ya Ya book and Prequel to the film. Yuck.
I like Hannibal the book. The movie was BALLS.

"PETER PAN (2003)"
WHAT!?! That's the best film version of the book ever made!! I thought a fellow Pan Fan would have known that!

Another vote for that Peter Pan movie being great -- I loved it - and it was far and away the most accurate (to the book) of any other version!

I completely agree with "Memoirs for a Geisha". I watched the movie and sat there going "wait...where's the rest of the story?????". Beautiful movie, but only part of the story.
I also felt this way about "Girl with the Pearl Earring". My take on the book was that while the young woman may have been in love with Vermeer, his interest in her was purely as a fellow artist and a muse. The movie made it extremely sexual, and I never got that from the book.

(the modern day TWIST)...and i was DESPERATE for it. at the end, i was like...NOOOOOOOOOOOOO..where's the old lady, walking across the street in new york!? where is she?!!!!!!!

RUNNING WITH SCISSORS, definitely.
Almost all of the Stephen King adaptations except for CARRIE, THE DARK HALF, SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, and STAND BY ME. You'd think his works would be naturals for screen adaptation, but the obsessions and psychoses of his characters just seem vulgar and stupid when visualized. PET SEMATARY, a brilliant book, is MANGLED onscreen.
On the other hand, I think COLD MOUNTAIN is at least equal to the book, possibly better, and THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING is actually an improvement. It's probably harder to come up with movies that are superior to books--the GODFATHER pictures, definitely!
