Thomas James O’Leary starred in the title role of Broadway’s longest-running play, The Phantom of the Opera, for almost three years, including the production’s special 10th anniversary performance. He originated the role of Captain Schultz in Broadway’s Miss Saigon, directed by Nicholas Hytner, and was in the original casts of the first national companies of Les Miserables, directed by John Caird and Trevor Nunn, and Chess directed by Des McAnuff.
Tom is a member of the musical theatre performance faculty at AMDA College and Conservatory of the Performing Arts in Hollywood, where he recently directed an original musical revue, Both Sides of the Fence. He also co-directed Les Miserables with the California Youth Conservatory Theatre which runs at the Lyceum Theatre in San Diego June 7-23. Other recent directing credits include several world premieres in Los Angeles, including Dusty de los Santos by Boni B. Alvarez and An Ohio Tragedy by Tami Tirgrath for the Skylight Theatre, The Escape Artist’s Children by Steve Harper at Celebration Theatre, and an original adaptation of Beckett’s The Lost Ones for Trinity Rep’s Studio B in Rhode Island. Tom coaches privately in the LA area and teaches master classes all over the country.
Tom has performed in over a hundred plays Off-Broadway and regionally, including You Never Can Tell (Yale Rep), Jon Tolin’s Last Sunday in June (Century Center), Lee Blessing’s Two Rooms (Blue Heron Theatre in NYC) and, more recently, Take Me Out at the Celebration Theatre in Hollywood (LA Weekly Award for Supporting Male Performance and BroadwayWorld LA Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play) and Travels with My Aunt at the Colony Theatre in Burbank. Film appearances include The Cookout with Queen Latifah and Tracie Laymon’s Inside, which received a Milan International Film Festival nomination in 2009. Television credits include Law & Order, Monk, Related, General Hospital and All My Children.
Tom received a BFA in acting from the University of Connecticut before completing the training program at Trinity Rep Conservatory in Providence, R.I., where he worked for three years with Richard Jenkins. He has studied voice with Bill Schumann in NYC and Joel Ewing in LA. He has trained privately for over 20 years with renowned acting teachers Harold Guskin, Suzanne Shepherd, Tim Phillips and Bob Krackower.
