Thoughts On The Stem Cell Bill?
#0Thoughts On The Stem Cell Bill?
Posted: 7/18/06 at 5:06pmAs many of you probably know, today the Senate is voting on the stem cell research bill. Bush has vowed to veto the bill, using his first veto in five and a half years of presidency. Even his usual backers, including Crazy Frist and the Governator, are telling him to back off on this one. Anyone have thoughts?

Go ahead, veto it.
All it will do is make his base happy, and make those in the middle further question the direction of this government.
Vetoing this bill will not help them in November elections - it will be a big gift to the Democrats.
But, with our luck, they will find a way to screw this up as well.

Posted: 7/18/06 at 5:14pmMy question is how much will it pass by? Do they have enough for the overturn?

63-37, which is short of the votes needed to override a veto.

I just don't understanad the opposition on this one. I understand it's an abortion matter, but if the embryos are going to be thrown out anyway...

"The simple answer is he thinks murder's wrong," said White House spokesman Tony Snow. "The president is not going to get on the slippery slope of taking something living and making it dead for the purposes of scientific research."
Please get your religious beliefs out of my science.

Posted: 7/18/06 at 5:46pmMy anger has nothing to do with the bill's relation abortion (though I am pro-choice). As someone who had a terminally ill parent, this INFURIATES me. Medical progress is going to be halted because of Bush kow-towing to such a small, rabid populace (and all of the Republicans I know are liberal on issues like this). This is, in what way, "pro-life"?

I am as angry about this as I am about Bush's anti-gay marriage stance. Zoney has already articulated my feelings on this with his posts.
Just INSANITY.

Hey, I have lost an eye to infantile glaucoma and with stem-cell research, I could possibly see in both eyes again. I could drive. I could do all those things that I can't do that everyone takes for granted. In my opinion, George W. Bush is impeding my right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness by vetoing this.
personally, I believe that there's already a cure for cancer. It just would not be financially beneficial for pharmaceuticacl companies to release it because chemo and radiation is making them so much money. It's a shame what our country will do for money.
