Today, January 6, is Three Kings Day (Dia de los Reyes Magos), also known as the Epiphany, is a Christian celebration that commemorates the Biblical story of the three kings who followed the star of Bethlehem to bring gifts to the Christ child.

Not as big as Christmas, it's still a widely celebrated holiday in some Latin American countries.

So on that note, happy Three Kings Day!

Actually... the true last day of the Christmas celebration is February 2. Called El Día de la Candelaria (or Candlemas), also known as the Presentation of the Christ Child, marks the official end of the Christmas season.

We're celebrating tonight with a pot-luck dinner party. It's so warm outside (72 today) that it FEELS like we're in Latin America.

Have a great day!

Just a reminder: Who ever bites into the "Jesus doll" has to host the party on Feb. 2nd.

*hopes it's not him*

For the gringos on this board: February 2nd is to commemorate Candelaria Day, not Groundhog Day.

Woo-hoo! I didn't get the Jesus doll.

That sounds like fun, moonie. Do you all do the 'rosca' with the doll inside?

I never get the doll. But I'll host the party anyway.

Feliz Dia de Reyes!

They were very good to me this year. :)

And it amuses me that my dad always insists on leaving the Christmas tree and lights up until February 2.

Anyway, a los latinos, and all the gringos too, muchas felicidades!

I'm dreaming of a white (as in snowy!) Three Kings Day, just like the ones I used to know...

DD- no, we Acadians have a King cake on Mardi Gras with the baby Jesus doll baked inside. Whoever gets the doll is the King/Queen of next year's Mardi Gras.

French Canadians are into delayed gratification.

PJ - the beach sand is the only white you'll find on a day like today.

King cake! We used to have it at school (but then, it sort of ties into Mardi Gras down there).
I never ate the baby Jesus.

It is Christmas for the Ukrainian Orthodox religion (hubby's father's side of the family - which means Christmas #3 this weekend).

I thought whoever got the doll in the King Cake had to provide the cake the next year. Doesn't matter. My friends and I always take turns getting one, sometimes two, for our Mardi Gras party every year.

DD, I never knew that about February 2 being the last "true" end to the Christmas season. Now I really don't feel bad leaving my tree up until then.

I hung out with Cheyenne Jackson in his dressing room waayyyyyy before he tickled D2.

I was at first shocked to see people here take down their trees right after Christmas.

But I'm not one to talk, being that I don't even put up a tree.

Singer - I'll send you your own King cake - then you'll be sure to get the baby.

Girly - I always use that as my excuse to leave Christmas stuff up. In truth, it's my procrastination, but it's a handy excuse.

Bluemoon: I once lived next to these people who insisted on displaying their Christmas decorations year-round. Imagine plastic flying reindeer and the like on a hot July afternoon.

... or laziness. That's what I always chalked it up to. Their grass was always overgrown and their house looked like it could've used a few repairs.

According to the Catholic tradition, the Christmas season ends next Sunday with the Feast Baptism of the Lord. After that we take doen the Christmas decorations.
