Lately, I cannot get enough of both of these podcasts.
Thrilling Adventure Hour is a comedic take on old-time radio shows with a suspense show (Beyond Belief), space westerns (Sparks Nevada, Marshall on Mars and Cactoid Jim), and superhero capers (Captain Laserbeams). I love them all, particularly Beyond Belief, where Paul F. Tompkins and Paget Brewster play booze-loving supernatural investigators (kinda) from Park Avenue.
Welcome to Night Vale is also fun. The podcasts are a radio dj's news show about Night Vale, a town with supernatural dog parks and a glow cloud. In every episode, the "weather report" is a random real indie band's song.
Any other fans of them?
I've heard much buzz around Thrilling Adventure Hour but haven't explored it yet, but I've been on the Night Vale train for about a month now and find it fills a podcast niche I hadn't known I needed filled but love. The level of craft in the writing is sometimes inconsistent but often brilliant. And, of course, Cecil Baldwin is a fantastic narrator.
Cecil is really, really great
Do check out Thrilling eventually. Just the other day, I went through the Sparks Nevada podcasts in order, and I cannot wait until the next installment. I think I prefer Beyond Belief, as it is more like the classic radio shows, but Sparks's stories are a continuous narrative whereas Beyond's stories can be listened to individually.
Also, luxe radio shows are also available through multiple podcasts. It really is incredible to listen to the actual Cecil b. DeMille talk about war bonds and know that it's World War 2.
