Tim Burton's Best Film

I love mostly all of them - it's so hard to choose!

I love the original "Batman" with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson. That's classic Tim Burton to me.

But I also really enjoy "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" and "Ed Wood". And OOH - "Beetlejuice"! - and OOH OOH! - "Edward Scissorhands".

I hated "Planet of the Apes".

re: Tim Burton's Best Film

Ed Wood is utter genius. I think it would have to rate as my favourite Tim Burton movie.

re: Tim Burton's Best Film

Ed Wood's my favorite movie of all-time.

But I can still watch Pee Wee's Big Adventure and laugh like I've never seen the thing before.

re: Tim Burton's Best Film

In case people aren't too familiar with the films he's made - here's the list:

Frankenweenie
Aladdin (for Faerie Tale Theatre)
Pee-Wee's Big Adventure
Beetlejuice
Batman
Edward Scissorhands
Batman Returns
Ed Wood
Mars Attacks!
Sleepy Hollow
Planet of the Apes
Big Fish

And I suppose I'll let Nightmare Before Christmas count.

Nightmare Before Christmas!!!!

re: Tim Burton's Best Film

He didn't direct Nightmare, though...
I would have to say Edward Scissorhands is my fave Burton flick, only because it's so stylistically interesting to me.

Three way tie... Big Fish, Beetlejuice ("Nice F*cking Model!" taught me the naughty word), and Sleepy Hollow.

re: Tim Burton's Best Film

Edward Scissorhands is one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen. It also features a perfect score by Danny Elfman.

re: Tim Burton's Best Film

Agreed, Matt...but most of Tim Burton's films feature fine efforts by Sir Elfman.
I forgot all about Big Fish being Tim's film. I was honestly surprised that I loved that film so much and kept wondering if I saw the same one as the critics, who all seemed to, well, not like it.

re: Tim Burton's Best Film

BIG FISH bothered me. It ripped off so many movies that it got to a point where I (no joke) could recite the dialogue the first time I saw it. The movie did nothing for me. However Jessica Lange was in it, so I give it points for that.

re: Tim Burton's Best Film

Actually 'Big Fish' got 140 positive reviews and 44 negative ones, per rottentomatoes.com so most critics were into it.

re: Tim Burton's Best Film

JohnPopa, I'm too lazy right now to go to the site, but are the negative ones from the major trades and papers? BEcause I hardly remember a single good review.

re: Tim Burton's Best Film

I don't know who said what and I think the only way to figure it out is to read them all and compute from there which I don't really have time to do either.

I know Roger Ebert didn't like it, though.

re: Tim Burton's Best Film

I had managed to block Planet Of The Apes from my mind, thanks for the total recall.

And as for Big Fish, I am glad I am not alone in being underwhelmed by it. I was quite bored with it *SPOILER ALERT* until Albert Finney died. The scene of him being carried to the river by Billy Crudup and Jessica Lange was there waiting for him made me weep. Had the rest of the movie been that involving and moving, it would have been a winner.

BeetleJuice. Before he became a Hollywood hipster.
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

re: Tim Burton's Best Film

I grew up completely obsessed w/ "Batman" and "Batman Returns." So those are probably my favorites. But I do also remember loving "Beetlejuice." In fact, I like pretty much all of his films. They're all shot beautifully and usually acted quite well.

Big Fish...or Edward Scissorhands. I can't wait for him to do Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!

Edward Scissorhands...love it(my mom has never seen it!)
You aren't feeling overwhelmed are you?

re: Tim Burton's Best Film

Just my opinion, but Ed Wood is his masterpiece. Thanks for reminding me--I haven't watched it in a couple of years and probably should.

re: Tim Burton's Best Film

Tim Burton just came up with the idea of Nightmare Before Christmas. He didn't direct it.

But still...it was amazing. And Big Fish makes me giggle.

re: Tim Burton's Best Film

I'm sorry, but Big Fish, to me, is one of the finest movies I've ever seen...

I weep every time I watch it.

Pure beauty.

But MAN I love Batman and Edward Scissorhands!! :)
