He would have been 78 today, February 6, 2009. I honor it every year by watching one of his films.

One of the things I love about celebrating Truffaut's birthday is...he was an actual person.

That's a good thing! I always thought Francois was quite attractive.

Actually, now that you mention it...he does resemble my father. And they dressed alike, too.

LOL. I read those first two posts, and thought you'd gone off to your own foreign language film world!

I can't believe Truffaut died so young! I grew up watching his movies. My parents used to take me to all the Disney, Truffaut and Fellini movies. Yeah, it was odd, but that was my childhood. I remember vividly seeing The Wild Child, Day For Night, Small Change and so many others. And I was all but 10 or 11 at the time.

But I think my dad (in particular) knew how well Truffaut directed children in his films. Spielberg credits Truffaut as an idol and mentor for that reason (among others).

So for me, Truffaut represents my "children's films" experience! Even if they're not classified as such.

Besty, I never realized his role in your life. He means so much to me, too. I'll tell you all about it sometime (soon).

He was not always an easy man to know, but he loved children, and they returned the sentiment. If, in no other way, by always delivering memorable performances.

It's a classic!

The first French film I remember seeing is Jules et Jim. It may even be the first French film I ever saw. Or maybe the others before that were not as memorable. I was a teenager, but a young woman, with two males who were the best of friends, both in love with me. Something like Hey Babu Reba, I guess. I thought that this director knew how to make a film. I still think that.

Jules and Jim is a brilliant film. I never tire of it. Jeanne Moreau is mesmerizing as Catherine. It may be the greatest film role ever created for and by a woman. (Must give Moreau credit where it is due. She had as much to do with the development and realization of Catherine as Truffaut did.

One of Truffaut's gifts was the ability to take "dime store" novels and turn them into first-rate films. Even his "failures" are better than a lot of movies produced today...and he always had very low budgets. (With a few exceptions. But even those were small by Hollywood standards.)

Shoot the Piano Player is another favorite film of mine. I wonder how many people see its influence in Fargo, among others.

And the Antoine Doinel series. The scene where Jean-Pierre Leaud stands in front of the mirror invoking the names of his obsessions is classic.
