Tony Bennett - An American Classic

I can't believe someone hasn't already started a thread on this. The show was superb! Best television special in a decade! It's going to win every Emmy award it qualifies for, including one for Director Rob Marshall. It harkens back to the days of Judy, Barbara, Liza, etc. For anyone who missed it, you really missed a very special special! Hard to believe he's celebrating his 80th birthday. He's still in great voice. And the guest stars were all excellent, as was the choreography and overall look of the show. My only regret was that it wasn't longer. Wish it had been a 2-hour special. But, nonetheless, definitely an instant classic! And fortunately, it'll be available on DVD. Can’t wait to add it to my collection!

I watched it. It was wonderful! The lighting and the camera shots were beautiful. LOVED it.

I saw it, and was very pleased. I can't believe that he's eighty either. He still sounds amazing. I'll have to check out the DVD.

He's a good singer, but I found it boring. After the intro with Barbra I turned the channel. He's one of few old-fashioned singers I can't stand.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I am watching it now and it's absolutely sumptuous. Rob Marshall was the perfect choice. Every frame is an absolute treat. I'm proud it's on my network of employ.

*sigh*

I'm taping it now, but trying NOT to watch any of it so that I can share it with the TinMan.

I have more self control than I realized.

Well, at least as concerns television taping . . .

I swear to god "The best is yet to come" looked like the 1997 Khaki campaign Gap ad..what the hell was that?

It was an homage to the type of production numbers you would routinely see on the likes of the Judy Garland Show, and other such variety shows of the 60's. And it was spot on!

Are you from England? Because that "spot on" thing is really played out, even over there where it started.

What's with the personal attacks? Why the bitterness? It isn't born from here - and I certainly don't play a part, you've hardly even registered on my radar. So what gives? And what's your point?

re: Tony Bennett - An American Classic

My point is that I have nothing but the utmost respect for you. You're truly an asset to the board. Your comments and observations are always intelligent, balanced and thoughtful. I aspire to be more like you. I may not register on YOUR radar, but you certainly register on MINE! re: Tony Bennett - An American Classic

Luscious - As much as I like having . . . well, what you said . . . I still don't get what you're aiming for. Believe me, I'm one of the worst around here for having my heart and hands in different places (TYPING hands, don't go there re: Tony Bennett - An American Classic) so I really am just trying to understand. You seem so passionate, but I'm not getting what I'm supposed to be persuaded toward.

re: Tony Bennett - An American Classic

DG... I'm not trying to persuade you toward anything. I AM passionate about my beliefs, as are you. But I'm not trying to convince you or anyone else to come over to my way of thinking. It's enough for me to believe what I believe without having to convert or recruit others. I use BWW as a sounding board. It’s so much cheaper than therapy and about as equally effective.

PS. You're going to LOVE the Tony Bennett special! Let me know what you think after you've watched it.

I can't wait to see it. I haven't gotten his DUETS CD yet, but I love the one he did with k.d.lang. I just had a laugh because, when I went in to turn to recorder off, there was an ad for the Madonna concert on Wednesday. I may put them back-to-back just for kicks.

re: Tony Bennett - An American Classic

Well... I have to admit, I'll be watching that one too tomorrow night. But Tony's special is really in a class by itself. In fact, it was the classiest thing on T.V. in a very long time. And I loved the duet with k.d., as well! Every segment was well produced and beautifully filmed and performed. My crystal ball sees many Emmys in its future. Enjoy!!!

re: Tony Bennett - An American Classic

Hang in there! You can do it! You'll enjoy it that much more having someone to share it with. I watched it alone, and wished the BF was here to enjoy it with me. Guess that's why I started a thread about it. I had no one to talk about it with during or after. I'm just really surprised that more people aren't commenting on it. Hope I didn't build it up too much.
