I must add
Manfred Mann - Blinded By The Light

CSN&Y: Suite Judy Blue Eyes

Jimi Hendrix: All Along the Watchtower (or Purple Haze, if you wish)

Cream: Sunshine of Your Love

I would choose Bowie's Changes instead of Young Americans, but that's just me. And when it comes to the Doors, I would nominate Roadhouse Blues rather than Break on Through, but a case could also be made for Light My Fire.

And at the risk of sounding picky, they were still the Jefferson Airplane when White Rabbit was recorded...

re: Top Classic ROCK Songs of All time

Pretty much tuned out the minute things turned to drugs, and hated most rock music.

Except for Hendrix, and "Are You Experienced?"

The allure of Joplin (Janis not Scott) eluded me.

Clarification: should we aim for TOP Rock Songs or FAVORITE Rock Songs? Because, there IS a difference. We could create an "Official BWW Playlist". re: Top Classic ROCK Songs of All time

Orion? It's your thread. Define, please.

Additions:

Pink Floyd: Money (top) or Shine On You Crazy Diamond (favorite)
Dire Straits: Money for Nothing (top) or Brothers in Arms (favorite)

Janie's Got a Gun (I have no idea why that came into my head when I read this)

re: Top Classic ROCK Songs of All time

My favorite has always been Bohemian Rhapsody, ever since I was in grade school. I know, I know. . . Its not an original answer but I like it.

Paint it Black by the Rolling Stones has always intrigued me. And I've always been a pretty big Doors fan. Their work is completely classic.

no classic Rock list is complete without The Who, possibly the greatest band of all time! I nominate the entire score of Tommy. Phenomenal music on that cd.

Okay, okay. No need to criticize, papa...feel free to contribute.

Free Bird, Closer to My Home. Kick Out the Jams, and Fortunate Son.
I'm not really sure about including Iggy...I'm not even sure he would WANT to be included...

You're on your own for the rest...

In my personal opinion, the whole Dark Side of the Moon Album by Pink Floyd should be included in the "top classic rock" category, not just "Money." A personal favorite is "Time."

re: top classic rock songs of all time

I agree that Changes is a great song. I chose Young Americans because, I guess, I could relate to the lyrics when I was a kid. Plus, I have a really cool connection with YA. When I was a kid hanging on the streets and looking all punk, Bowie was doing a concert in town, part of which included a remixed version of YA during which images of real people where projected behind him on a three story screen. I guess in each city on the tour, they went out and took pics of young Americnas (mostly hustlers, punks, prostitutes) to incorporate into the display. I was one of them. Some guy approached me, told me what he was doing and took some pics of me with my pierced cheek, blue streaked hair and black lipstick then gave tix to the concert. So, Young Americans remains one of my favorite Bowie songs.

I was sitting on the beach when this occured to me and I said to myself "Iflit will correct me on that one."

"Clarification: should we aim for TOP Rock Songs or FAVORITE Rock Songs?"

I went with my personal favorites that most people would know...so, I guess it's whatever. There are lesser known songs that i might choose from some bands instead of their hits but most people wouldn't know what they are. How's that a non-committal answer?

re: top classic rock songs of all time

It's a perfect answer, O, because it allows open interpretation of the question without us sabotaging your intent for the thread.

Changes vs. Young Americans...it justs illustrates the difference in our ages, nothing more. Mr. Bowie, older than BOTH of us (and sounds, looks, and moves mighty fine...saw him last summer...), still manages to be relevent, much to his credit.

re: top classic rock songs of all time

Don't worry about sabotaging, the intent I had was to find something to do while I waited for the spouse to finsish showering and primping to go to the beach (don't ask cuz I don't know).

Jose, I think the appeal of Janis Joplin was more her style of singing than anything else. It was the same kind of appeal that Billie Holiday had. Janis' voice was far from pleasant and soothing, but it was strong, soulful and full feeling. When she sang, you hear every bit of pain she had lived through.

Janis put herself out there, warts and all. Metaphorically speaking.

re: top classic rock songs of all time

There's this guy named Bruce Springsteen ... :)

Who, by the by, wrote "Blinded By the Light." Mandred Mann just covered it. Bruce also wrote "Because the Night" for Patti Smith.

I'd list (not sure if they're 'top' or 'favorite' as much as I'm just trying to list some definitive stuff.)

"Born To Run" by The Boss (although I'm more a "Thunder Road" guy.)

"Tie Your Mother Down" by Queen

"School's Out" by Alice Cooper

"Mississippi Queen" by Mountain

"We Gotta Get Out of This Place" by The Animals

"I Don't Need No Doctor" by Mott the Hoople

"Bang A Gong (Get It On)" By T-Rex

"Lawyers, Guns and Money" by Warren Zevon.

It's punk but I'd put "I Wanna Be Sedated" by The Ramones on any list of great rock

and something by Creem, because if you don't list Creem, rock people will throw shards of glass at your eyes.

I know Springsteen wrote it. I've also heard him sing it - and I much prefer Manfred Mann's version.
