The term white trash is inherently classist. Classism is something that is rarely talked about in this country.

It is entirely possible for women to give birth without ever knowing they were pregnant. It is not common, and it is not "normal." But there are certainly documented cases of women so disconnected from their physical bodies and so in denial about changes happening within it, that they are shocked when they go into labor and deliver. Such pregnancies very often have very poor outcomes.

An older woman I worked with lived in a woman's college dorm with a woman who delievered a baby in the rest room back in the early '60s. Nobody had any idea she was pregnant, people thought she had gained weight. The baby was stillborn and had gone nowhere near full term. The woman was discovered in a near catatonic state on the other side of the campus after the body was found in the restroom trash.

I think sometimes there is a huge lack of understanding of how the human mind can fracture and how people without access to their full faculties can behave in unthinkable ways. Which is ironic on this board.

Having lived in a house in the suburbs, various apartment complexes, and two trailer parks? I can pretty confidently say that behaviorally speaking there's no discernible division between the trash in the trailers and the trash everywhere else.

Changing "white trash" to "trailer trash" isn't any more accurate or sensitive, because trailer trash inherently implies white trash in the same manner "ghetto" implies the slurs more commonly used for "black trash".

Forgetting race, if it's really necessary to attribute this horrendous story to class, we might as well just name the thread Poor People Are Vile.

I'm not trying to be all INTERNET IS SRS BSNS up in this piece, but I go into a WHITE TRASH thread expecting Twinkie wedding cakes and hilarious variations on the mullet. This particular story is a bit too terrible for any of this to be appropriate.

The Hostess Extravaganza is pretty impressive. Almost makes me forget that Hostess products are generally pretty gross. Maybe if they put some Cinnamon Streusel Cakes in there...

Actually, if I went to a wedding and saw that first cake, I'd be thrilled beyond belief. I love those Hostess items... I haven't had any in yeeears. Now I really want some of those pink snowball concoctions...

FindingNamo, I was going to post something like that when I first read the thread. The police swooped in with criminal charges, but my first reaction to reading the story was that she was in shock, not an negligent child abuser that willfully left a baby to die. She did pull the baby out of the tank herself before the police arrived.

I've watched I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant in Discovery Health and women from all walks of life can end up in that situation. And quite a few give birth in toilets and public restrooms.

I hope this woman gets a decent lawyer. I doubt the police thought to have her speak to a psychologist. She may not be fit as a parent, but she shouldn't face criminal charges for this.
