I have no idea...the first thing that popped into my head was Jennifer Lopez playing Selena. But I don't know their #1 singles (or even if they both had #1 singles).
eta: okay, I'm thinking J.Lo's song is "If You Had My Love" and Selena's is "I Could Fall in Love." Updated On: 2/9/05 at 02:05 PM

Actually, that's the best possible guess there is. However, I should make it clear that I'm talking about the Top 40 Pop Charts, not one of the off-shoot charts, like Latin, Easy-Listening, Alternative, etc. The two people in my question, both had a number 1 single on the Top 40 Pop Chart.

Billie Holliday never had a number 1.

Okay, here goes nothing...

Doris Day had a No.1 hit with "Que Sera, Sera"

she portrayed Ruth Etting in LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME who had a No. 1 hit with "Ten Cents A Dance."

How I'm Doin'?

Close, but no cigar; but you are on the right track with that kind of thinking. Even the era.

Okay, back into the trenches...

Barbra Streisand had a No.1 hit with "People"

She portrayed Fanny Brice in FUNNY GIRL who had a No.1 hit with "My Man."

But from my Doris Day/Ruth Etting guess that was noted as being "close--right era"--it is my impression the answer is a singer from the 1950s playing a singer from the 1920s.

So, unfortunately, Debbie Reynolds and THE SINGING NUN is probably not the way to go...

Sorry, Marquise...

YES, YES, it IS Debbie. That's what I meant by you were close. Debbie and Doris had their hits in the same era. Marquise is correct. Debbie had a number 1 with Tammy and she played the Singing Nun who had a number 1 with Dominique!!! Very well done, Marquise. So, who has another question?

what famous small-cast play has the distinction of having the mother of the actress playing the original title character play the role in later incarnations of the popular title?

For extra points, name the playwright, play's setting and site of the original production (which happen to be the same city) and the MOTHER's professional name.
