When The Cole Porter Musical THE GAY DIVORCE was filmed in 1933, the title was changed to THE GAY DIVORCEE.

Why was this change put into effect?

GOOD LUCK, Everybody! Trivial Pursuit #114

The Hays Office (the Hollywood Production Code Gurus) decreed that a divorce could never be gay, but that a divorcee could.

Have a great Sunday!

Oh, and, it was Astaire and Rogers' first starring film.

Only one song from Porter's stage score was retained in the film, "Night and Day."

Betty Grable has a small part in the "Let's K-Knock K-Knees" number with Edward Everett Horton.

The film was released in October, 1934.

Just thought you'd want to know that, too.

Well, Jose' I CERTAINLY appreciate all your FINE information...

HOWEVER, I was looking for a MORE COMPLETE answer to my initial question--but you ARE most definitely on the right track!!! re: Trivial Pursuit #114

So, would you care to try to answer my initial question again?

(Oh, and BTW, I thought you might be interested to know that the Hollywood Censorship Office was the HAYES Office--a MINOR point, to, be sure--but I KNOW that you're a stickler for details!)

Was it because the censors objected to the title, so they just added an 'e'?

... I guess Jose' had to step out...

So I throw my question up to the Entire Board:

Can someone "fill in the blanks" and give us a more complete reason as to why the Hayes Office rejected the title THE GAY DIVORCE for the film version of the afore-mentioned Cole Porter musical?

RENT--YES, you GOT IT!!!

CONGRATULATIONS! re: Trivial Pursuit #114

YES, the Censors stated that the title THE GAY DIVORCE was unacceptable for the movie's title. RKO (the production company) protested vehemently that many films had used "Divorce" as part of their title.

HOWEVER, the Hayes Office stated THOSE films were dramas and NO MUSICAL could have a title like that. FINALY, they worked out a compromise and both sides agreed that the film be called THE GAY DIVORCEE! (For further details, please see The Astaire/Rogers Book by Arlene Croce.)

CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN, Rent!

Now for your bonus points:

What was THE ONLY Cole Porter song from the stage musical THE GAY DIVORCE retained in the film version THE GAY DIVORCEE?

(And P.S. Glebb I wish I was watching an Astaire/Rogers right now, too!) re: Trivial Pursuit #114

Well, Rent--I LOVE it as well!!!

AND I LOVE Your Answer--Because it is CORRECT! re: Trivial Pursuit #114

YES--when the "brilliant" Hollywood Moguls filmed THE GAY DIVORCEE, they DUMPED Cole Porter's MAGNIFICENT score--with the exception of "Night and Day".

BTW, I think its interesting to note that Cole Porter got to write the inspiration to write "Night and Day" when Mrs. John Astor complained at a Dinner Party, "The drip-drip-drip of a faucet is driving me MAD!!!" (American Musical Theatre, by David Ewen)

CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN, Rent! re: Trivial Pursuit #114

And your prize?

Well, you want a divorce--but your husband won't give it to you? So, you are going to hire a Gigolo to put you into a Compromising Position so you're husband will be FORCED to give you a Divorce!!!

But, RENT, please don't forget the secret password: "Chance is the Fool's Name for Fate."

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, folks!!! re: Trivial Pursuit #114

"Night and Day":

Like the beat beat beat of the tom-tom
When the jungle shadows fall
Like the tick tick tock of the stately clock
As it stands against the wall

Like the drip drip drip of the raindrops
When the sum'r show'r is through
So a voice within me keeps repeating
You-You-You

Night and day you are the one
Only you beneath the moon and sun
Whether near me or far
It's no matter, darling, where you are

I think of you, night and day

Day and night, why is it so
That this longing for you follows wherever I go?

In the roaring traffic's boom
In the silence of my lonely room
I think of you, night and day

Night and day under the hide of me
There's an, oh, such a hungry yearning
Burning inside of me

And its torment won't be through
Till you let me spent my life making love to you
Day and night, night and day

Well, RENT, you CAN change the password, but all I'm tellin' you, THAT password got Ginger in an AWFUL lot of trouble... re: Trivial Pursuit #114

BTW, my favorite quote from THE GAY DIVORCEE--

Mimi: But Hortense, what should I do? How should I act?

Hortense: Be sweet and feminine--if you can blend the two. re: Trivial Pursuit #114
