In 1946, the Broadway-bound ST. LOUIS WOMAN had serious Book trouble.
However, due to an Act of God, the production team could do VERY LITTLE to revise the Book.
Somebody please tell us what happened.
GOOD LUCK, Everybody!!!

Um, Countee Cullen, the author of the book, died?
YES-Margo, you are 100% Correct!!!
Ms. Cullen passed away while ST. LOUIS WOMAN was on the road so it was IMPOSSIBLE to revise the troubled book.
Many theatre critics and historians believe that although ST. LOUIS WOMAN had an UNMATCHED Arlen & Mercer score, the nearly unworkable Book did the show in and sent it to a VERY early grave.
WAY TO GO, Margo!!!
Now for your bonus points:
What was the hit song to emerge from ST. LOUIS WOMAN?--recorded by Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, and Ella Fitzgerald, among others?
I know
but I don't want to steal Margo's thunder
How VERY Curteous of YOU, Elphaba.
We'll give Miss Channing a few more minutes and then we'll throw it open to the Board.
But how NICE to see such a polite BWW Member!!!
it's the new meds, I am either very courteous, or a bitch on wheels
Dear. I HATE to be SO BOLD, but perhaps a little touch of makeup here or there might make for a sunnier disposition?
LOLOL.......but green IS my color M_E.......I mean I hoarded that fiestaware chartreuse for SO long before putting it all up on EBAY, that it just kinda rubbed off!
Gotcha, Elphaba.
Well, I guess Margo had to leave us.
So anyone on the Board may answer the Bonus Points Question:
What was the hit song to emerge from ST. LOUIS WOMAN?

Sorry, I was away.
"Come rain or Come Shine"
YES, Elphaba, you were "in the know" ALL ALONG, weren't you?
"Come Rain or Shine" has had a HIGLY varied life that far outreached the short Broadway run of ST. LOUIS WOMAN in 1946.
As mentioned earlier, Garland, Sinatra, Fitzgerald, and countless others have all had hits with it.
SO, Congratulations to BOTH Margo AND Elphaba!
Your prize is that you are know jockeys on a winning streak! You do just fine until you meet an evil woman, and THEN, you start to LOSE all the time.
It takes a death, the love of a good woman, and some divine intervention to turn you back into a winner, ah, what the heck, I told ya, it was a tacky book!
Enjoy the rest of your weekend, guys!!!
***Edit*** Sorry, Margo, just saw your post. Of course, you are correct as well.

I saw "St. Louis Woman" at Encores! a few years back with Vanessa Williams, Helen Goldsby et al..... Great score, terrible book (something to do with jockeys and horse racing). The show would only be revivable if someone were to toss that book out entirely and start over from scratch. Not sure if anyone's interested, but the score is so great , it would be worth it.
Timothy O'Donnell, a former regular on "The Young and The Restless", JUST released an album which features "Come Rain or Shine":

That's the title of my jazz CD. I adore that song (hence, why it's the title track.)
I did not, however, know anything about its origin in "St. Louis Woman," so thank you for bumping up this thread.
Whatever happened to Marquise? He was such an Angel.
