SHOW BOAT is one of my all-time FAVORITE musicals.
Towards the beginning of the musical, Queenie becomes concerned when Julie knows ALL the words to "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man."
Why is Queenie so suspicious?
GOOD Luck, Everybody!!! :)

Posted: 11/16/04 at 9:58amBecause people might figure out that she is like Carol Channing....part black...and won't be able to perform.

CLOSE ENOUGH, Boobs! :)
Yes, although Julie is later revealed to be a mulatto, at that point in the story, everyone thinks she's cauciasian (spelling?).
Anyway, "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" is a Black song (unfortunately, in those times, called a "Coon Song,") so Queenie is VERY suspicious that a "white" woman like Julie can sing the song in its entirity.
VERY creative answer to a tough question, Boobs!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Now for your bonus points: Under what circumstances does Magnolia sing a reprise of "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" in Act II of SHOW BOAT?
#4re: Trivial Pursuit #24
Posted: 11/16/04 at 10:11amHint #1: Magnolia needed a job.
#5re: Trivial Pursuit #24
Posted: 11/16/04 at 10:11amClearly she was a hooker.
#6re: Trivial Pursuit #24
Posted: 11/16/04 at 10:14amI think Rath is right on this one.
#7re: Trivial Pursuit #24
Posted: 11/16/04 at 10:16amWell, Rath, SHOW BOAT was a FAMILY show... but I do appreciate you taking the time to play our game. :)
#8re: Trivial Pursuit #24
Posted: 11/16/04 at 10:17amHint #2: Magnolia needed a job as a SINGER.
#9re: Trivial Pursuit #24
Posted: 11/16/04 at 10:17amSo in that case, they referred to her as a lady of the night?
#10re: Trivial Pursuit #24
Posted: 11/16/04 at 10:17amOh - she was one of those singing whores. Like Kristin Chenoweth. Who read Page Six today?
#11re: Trivial Pursuit #24
Posted: 11/16/04 at 10:19amWe don't need to read Page Six to know Chenoweth is singing whore, Rath.
#12re: Trivial Pursuit #24
Posted: 11/16/04 at 10:19amLOL Rath....thats cute!
#13re: Trivial Pursuit #24
Posted: 11/16/04 at 10:19amshe sang it as her audition for a saloon in Chicago... unbeknownst to her, Julie also works at this saloon and hears Magnolia sing the song...
#14re: Trivial Pursuit #24
Posted: 11/16/04 at 10:19amTrue, but confirmation is always satisfying.
#15re: Trivial Pursuit #24
Posted: 11/16/04 at 10:21amSo...Magnolia was the Mary Magdalene of "Showboat"??? I see the similarities..."Can't Help Lovin'Dat Man of Mine" and "I don't Know How to Love Him".

joeyjoe, you are 1000% Correct!!!
Yes, Magnolia sings a reprise of "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" while auditioning for a job in a saloon in Chicago.
I guess we have another prize split--between you and Boobs--one of you gets a free cruise down the Hudson River--and another gets a free cruise of the Mediterrean! :)
Have a GREAT day, everybody!
