Yes, the Gershwin satiric look at politics was the first musical to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama--back in 1931.
Son of...--you were QUITE CLOSE-- SOUTH PACIFIC was the SECOND Musical to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama!

Although unlike later musical Pulitzer winners, the Pulitzer for Of Thee I Sing was awarded to George S. Kaufman, Morrie Ryskind, and Ira Gershwin for the book and lyrics, but not to George Gershwin for his music.
