In 1958, Rodgers & Hammerstein were in a deep quandry over who to cast as 'Bloody Mary' in the film version of SOUTH PACIFIC.
On the one hand, they had deep foodness for Juanita Hall, who had created the part on Broadway; on the other, they also highly admired Muriel Smith, who played the role in the original London production.
Finally, they hit upon a VERY UNIQUE "compromise" casting decision.
Can someone please tell us what that was?
GOOD LUCK, Everybody!!!

Hint #3: Rodgers & Hammerstein "split the difference."

Juanita was dubbed by Muriel.
What was the song that was cut from the stage version, but was partially used in the film version?

CONGRATULATIONS, Jose'!
YES--R&H decided to use the talents of both Hall AND Smith--so they had Hall 'enact' the role but used Smith's vocals!!!
Pretty cool, huh?
I'm SO PLEASED we were able to get to the correct answer on that one!
And regarding YOUR question: the answer is "My Girl Back Home."
Now for YOUR bonus points, Jose'--shortly after filming SOUTH PACIFIC, Juanita Hall become involved in ANOTHER R&H project. Please tell us what it was.

Jose',
Are you referring to "Loneliness of Evening"--cut from the stage production of SOUTH PACIFIC but was later used in the 1967 TV production (Lesley Ann Warren) of CINDERELLA?

I guess Jose' had to step away...
So I'm going to throw his "bonus points" up to the whole Board:
What R&H project did Juanita Hall go to after finishing her work on the film SOUTH PACIFIC?

Sorry, Jose'--we had one of those darn message criss-crosses!
YES, ONCE AGAIN, you are ABSOLUTELY correct!!!
In fact, according to Abe Laufe's BROADWAY'S GREATEST MUSICALS, many theatergoers were surprised that Hall's vocals sounded so "different" on the stage in FLOWER DRUM SONG than in the film SOUTH PACIFIC! [Smith received NO film or soundtrack credit for her vocal work in film.]
And your prize, Jose'?
How does a two-week all-expense cruise of the South Pacific Islands sound to you--just please make sure to bring plenty of soap to wash any men outta your hair!
ENJOY Your Sunday, Everybody!!!
