Yes, Shirley MacLaine took over for Gwen in both the film version of CAN-CAN and SWEET CHARITY--only in DAMN YANKEES did Verdon recreate her stage role.

CONGRATULATIONS to both of you!!!

Now for your bonus points: When the film version of DAMN YANKEES was releasd in the UK, it was felt that having the word 'Damn' in the title might offended the Britishers so they changed the title.

What was the film called when it was released in the U.K.?

I thought MacLaine played Lilo's role in Can Can and that Gwen's role was played by Juliet Prowse.

Interesting observation, WOSQ--I think the film version of CAN-CAN extensivelyn rewrote the stage version and that one could argue that the role MacLaine played in the film version was a combination of the roles that Lilo and Verdon did in the stage version.

For example, MacLaine, although playing the owner of the nightclub (Lilo's role), performed the apache dance in the film (which Verdon had done on stage.)

Confusing...isn't it?

she did indeed play a composite of both the Lilo and Verdon roles...she says so on her website.

i saw the Chita tour of the show (with the Rockettes, a natural pairing) and also the Encores with Lupone, and i think the roles were separate in both. If they were combined in the movie, what did that leave for the wonderful Juliet Prowse to do?!!??!

My favorite anecdote about the movie's filming was the visit by Kruschev (or whoever, i'm a terrible history/politics person) who was disgusted by the big Can-Can numbers and the dancers showing their (at that time) brightly colored but still modest panties.

Will: They don't give out awards for helping people be gay... unless you count the Tonys. "I guarantee that we'll have tough times. I guarantee that at some point one or both of us will want to get out. But I also guarantee that if I don't ask you to be mine, I'll regret it for the rest of my life..."

Juliet Prowse didn't do a whole lot in the CAN-CAN film--aside from dancing the final Can-Can dance with MacLaine & Company.

And yes, Tx, you are 100% correct, it was indeed Kruschev who was shocked at the state of Hollywood films where dancers were allowed to dance "semi-nude" (as he put it.)

Although, according to MacLaine's autobiography, she got the impression that Kruschev was really enjoying the dance until he noticed that newsreels were filming him watching the dance--then he "acted offended" by the whole thing.

Can you name all the movies in which Gwen is seen as a featured dancer? I've seen ON THE RIVIERA, MEET ME AFTER THE SHOW and THE MERRY WIDOW.
