What QUITE WELL-KNOWN Composer/Lyricst was the only person to write lyrics for both Richard Rodgers AND his daughter Mary Rodgers?
GOOD LUCK, Everybody!!!

Posted: 3/20/05 at 2:07amWhy, Stephen Sondheim, of course!

Why, the winner is Priest, of course!
Hey, Priest, here's an idea: Why don't YOU start posting the questions and I'LL start playing!
No seriously, job well done on a VERY TOUGH ONE!!!
Yes, Stephen Sondheim colloborated with RICHARD Rodgers for the score for DO I HEAR A WALTZ? and Priest, for your bonus points, please tell us for which musical and for what song Sondheim worked with MARY Rodgers...

Posted: 3/20/05 at 2:19amThat was The Mad Show, for which he wrote the lyrics for "The Boy From," under the pseudonym Esteban Del Rio. (He also is rumored to have written a song or two for Hot Spot.)

Well, the shows Hey Love and Hot Spot had music by Rodgers, with some lyrics and/or "lyric assistance" by Sondheim.
One of the songs that was in both of those shows, as I believe Hey Love was more of a revue, was 'Don't Laugh' (Or 'Show Me')

magruder, AGAIN, you and Priest make a superb partnership!!!
YES, he and Mary colloborated to write "The Boy From..." for THE MAD SHOW.
(Never heard that info about HOT SPOT before, magruder. THANKS for that tidbit!)
AND ONCE MORE, Priest and magruder will share the prize:
a handsome stranger will come into your life and you'll FALL--in a BIG way! (he's so tall and slender). But unfortunately, he won't be sticking around for very long... you know how aloof some of those good-lookin' guys can be...
Enjoy the rest of your evening, folks!!!

"The Boy From...":
TALL AND TENDER, LIKE AN APOLLO
HE GOES WALKING BY, AND I HAVE TO FOLLOW HIM
THE BOY FROM TACAREMBO LA TUMBE DEL FUEGO SANTA MALIPAS ZATATECAS LA JUNTA DEL SOL Y CRUZ
WHEN WE MEET, I FEEL I'M ON FIRE
AND I'M BREATHLESS EVERYTIME I ENQUIRE
"HOW ARE THINGS IN TACAREMBO LA TUMBE DEL FUEGO SANTA MALIPAS ZATATECAS LA JUNTA DEL SOL Y CRUZ
WHY, WHEN I SPEAK, DOES HE VANISH?
OO-OO-OO-OO-OO-OO-OO
WHY IS HE ACTING SO CLANNISH?
OO-OO-OO-OO-OO-OO-OO
I WISH I UNDERSTOOD SPANISH
WHEN I TELL HIM I THINK HE'S THE END
HE GIGGLES A LOT WITH HIS FRIEND
TALL AND SLENDER, MOVES LIKE A DANCER
BUT I NEVER SEEM TO GET ANY ANSWER
FROM THE BOY FROM TACAREMBO LA TUMBE DEL FUEGO SANTA MALIPAS ZATATECAS LA JUNTA DEL SOL Y CRUZ
I GOT THE BLUETH
WHY ARE HIS TROUSERS VERMILLION
HIS TROUSERS ARE VERMILLION
WHY DOES HE CLAIM HE'S CASTILIAN
HE THAYTH THAT HE'TH CATHTILIAN
WHY DO HIS FRIENDS CALL HIM LILLIAN
AND I HEAR AT THE END OF THE WEEK
HE'S LEAVING TO START A BOUTIQUE
THOUGHT I SMILE, I'M ONLY PRETENDING
'CAUSE I KNOW TODAY'S THE LAST I'LL BE SPENDING
WITH THE BOY FROM TACAREMBO LA TUMBE DEL FUEGO SANTA MALIPAS ZATATECAS LA JUNTA DEL SOL Y CRUZ
TOMORROW HE SAILS
HE'S MOVING TO WALES
TO LIVE IN LLANFAIRPWLLGWYNGYLLGOGERYCHWYR NDROBULLLLANDYSILIOGOGOGOCH!!!

Posted: 3/20/05 at 2:32amMagruder, is it really only "rumored" that he wrote some lyrics for Hot Spot?

Posted: 3/20/05 at 2:36amWell, it's more than a rumor, but I don't recall what songs (beyond "Don't Laugh") he was supposed to have had a hand in.

Well, this website documents Sondheim's contributions to HOT SPOT as fact:

Posted: 3/20/05 at 2:37amBut, Mary_Ethel, that IS a Sondheim "Fan site," so it -might- be biased...

Of course, my favorite thing about "The Boy From" is that Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobylllantysiliogogogoch
is a real place.
It's Welsh for "The church of Mary in the hollow of the white hazel near the fierce whirlpool and the church of Tysilio by the red cave".

EUREKA!!!
Here's a PLAYBILL article which details the ENTIRE inception of HOT SPOT, including EXACTLY when Sondheim was brought in to help out with the score (per this article the Rodgers/Sondheim number "Don't Laugh" WAS used in the score; the other--"Who Knows?"--wasn't.)
