Turner Exhibit at Metropolitan Museum

I went to this today, and loved it. The Tate has sent over some magnificent stuff, including (in ten rooms of his work!) the Snowstorm/Hannibal Crossing the Alps, which I have never seen, and a couple of dozen watercolor studies for the Burning of the Houses of Parliament paintings. Oddly enough, I particularly love the unfinished paintings that were part of the Turner bequest to the nation - such economical use of color. Anyone else a Turner fan?

I've never given Turner a fair shot. I've always put him in the "whats so special" category.

Thanks for the reminder. I'm going to have to give him a real serious look while I have a chance.

When you go, don't stand too close to his paintings. (The exhibit was crowded, so a lot of people were standing close and peering up at the work.) Stand back, and pay attention to the light, and, in the marine paintings, the weight of the water. His human figures are often unremarkable because he really wants to see if he can recreate the effect of light and of moving water. His yellows and whites are pure radiance.

If you miss this exhibit - which would be a pity - the Frick has several wonderful examples of his work that aren't going anywhere.

I saw this exhibit eariler this year at the Dallas Museum of Art. It definitely is worth a look.

I saw the Jackie Fashion exhibit in DC. It was divine. Absolutely divine.

I really wish I could see that photography exhibit, but I won't be able to get there before September 1.

"Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy" is fascinating. Some wonderful film costumes and fashion designs juxtaposed against each other. Another exhibit worth a look if you can make it!

I went with my mom last week, or maybe the week before and I sort of fed off her excitement. It was my first experience with impressionism so it was really fascinating, especially when they had the muses right next to his works. I do remember Hannibal crossing the alps, and the burning of parliament was also a stand out for me. My favorites were the Mortlake Terrace, and there was another one that was absolutely stunning but I can't remember the name for the life of me. eee. but I agree, it's an exhibit worth seeing.

Dbillyp- I saw that as we were leaving, and realized I wanted to see it but we were being herded out.

Mortlake is one of my favorites, and its companion piece is at the Frick Collection. Did you know that the black dog was added at the last minute, possibly not by Turner?

I've been wanting to see this exhibit, thanks for the reminder.

I didn't see what all the fuss was about with Turner, only having seen reproductions in books. And then I saw the real thing up close at the National Gallery in London. They just don't translate in even the best reproduction. You really shouldn't pass up the chance to see this amazing paintings in person.

Good point, Roscoe! Even the best reproductions can't capture the quality of the light in Turner paintings.

I was up at dawn (literally) Sunday morning, driving to Connecticut from JFK airport, and as the sun came up, I was astounded to see a perfect Turner sunrise, with the bright white center, and yellow rays fanning outward. There were even his typical little horizontal clouds high above the horizon that started out grey and eventually were touched with rose.

I've tried for years to like Turner. I've seen a lot of them. Though he did produce a number of truly great paintings ("The Slave Ship" from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston is his best work in America, and sadly NOT in the Met show) by and large Turner still leaves me cold.

Turner has always been one of my favorite artists, next to Goya and Pissarro.

His painting "Slave Ship" is absolutely beautiful.

Since Turner gave all his unsold works at the time of his death to the "Nation," much of his best work is in the Tate and National Galleries, so this exhibit is a good chance to see a larger selection of his output.

This exhibit is touring. It started at the National Gallery in Washington, and is at the MET until September 21. I don't know where it is off to after that, but the MET website should say.

"The three-city tour opens on Oct. 1 [2007] at the National Gallery, where the show will run through Jan. 6 before going to Dallas from Feb. 10 to May 18, 2008, and on to the Met from June 24 to Sept. 21, 2008."

*sigh*

Oh, well. Wish I could have seen it.

I saw it last Friday and I enjoyed it.
