Omigod, I'm feeling like it's 1987 again and I'm a shrieking jr. high kid, that was absolutely amazing!!!
Did anyone see that? That was absolutely unlike anything I've ever seen on SNL and I'm totally blown down. The cast looked equally surprised, to say nothing of MOVED...and of all songs for them to do, WHOA!!
Wow, I'm having a groupie moment, feel free to join me if you also go weak in the knees from an echo-y Edge chord.....
*sigh*
Twas amazing indeed!
I know!!!! I didn't see your thread--we were posting at the same time. Honestly, they were my "wicked/bkln/rent..." So I'm totally adrenalized.
I know, I feel all pumped now! I wish they didn't have to cut away and end the show. Geez, they should have just done an hour and a half U2 concert. The show itself sucked royally (they've gone SO far downhill!) I'm totally psyched for the Spring tour now. I've been kicking myself for the past couple years, passing on going to see them in Boston on the Elevation tour. ARG! Please, powers that be, please have tix in the $40/50 range! It even kills me to spend that much, but I'll be holding my breath that the nosebleeds will be quasi-affordable for my college budget!
I was in nosebleed on the Zoo-TV tour. It will be a great time, don't worry:) They're like a freaking spiritual experience live.
I didn't think the whole ep sucked....the trainwreck awards sketch and downer debby were funny and the Apprentice one was ok. But overall it seemed like more d*ck jokes than EVER--like maybe it was a deliberate "SUCK IT!" to the Religious Right.
Whatever, I just called someone on the West Coast and instructed them to tape it....that moment when Luke says where are they and then those TELLTALE chords of "I Will Follow".....AAHHHHH!! Yes. I'm seriously psyched.
Oh, it's not the actual nosebleed seats that bother me at all. I just saw REM at MSG from the highest tier a couple weeks ago, and I was totally fine w/ it. I was at a great angle to the stage, and I know I could see a hell of a lot more than the people that were in like the 40th row of floor seats! I'm just hoping that they aren't like 70 bucks+ for the cheapest seats, or anything crazy like that! Can't wait to go home for Thanksgiving now and listen to my Joshua Tree LP (music's always so much better on vinyl! It just seems to have more...character or something. I don't know.)

1987 again? After "I Will Follow" over the close it was 1980 again. I saw them twice on the Boy tour. Twice on the October tour. Three times on the War tour.
That was back when you could get tickets to shows. Oh yeah, there were no more than 50 people at the first Boy show I saw and under 200 at the second.
Those were the days.
Uno, dos, tres, catorce.
I've eventually had to replace on CD....all of my old cassette tapes have been worn out and warped. But after this performance I'm going to have to dig out BOY again!! Amazing that a 24-year old song sounded so kick-Ass and fresh tonight.

The first time I saw them they had so few songs that they did that in the set and the encore. And I've never ever gotten tired of it. Even though the guitar line is direct from Public Image, Ltd's song "Public Image."
1987 = Joshua Tree Tour.
Unlike you, lucky Namo, I wasn't quite old enough or clued in enough to see them in the very early '80s. I'm jealous of your Boy/October/War shows. I very well might have fainted if I'd seen "October" played live. I practically faint hearing "Bad" on tape, let along what it's like as an encore.
Anyone else notice Bono's Castillian pron. of "ca-tor-the" tonight? Loved that.
Can I just say, for the millionth time, that SNL SUCKS now? (I haven't seen U2 yet and that - and Weekend Update - are the only things keeping me on the channel.)
Edit: Yep, just saw U2's opening song. I take it this isn't the big awesome mind-blowing experience everyone's referring to? I mean, they look like they're rocking it better than anyone on SNL in recent memory, but......Is this what you guys were talking about?
Tiff, re: your edit....nope. The first 2 performances are great, mind you, but wait. There's a surprise at the end.
They did not just seriously cut away after "One more...".
I am totally feelin' the cast crying over that. Look at Amy and Maya! Wow. Cool.
I know! Glad you enjoyed it:) I'm still up in NYC at 4am, and I think part of it is that performance pumping me up so much.
...yeah, sucks that they cut away, but it was 1am and the credits had rolled....at least they let them finish the song (I will Follow, not whatever mystery 4th one we missed...) and it was AWESOME!!!

I'm STILL all over that! I just...wide awake now. They have GOT to put the 4th song online, right?? God I love old school U2! And were my eyes deceiving me or was Bono's crotch up to one shocked gal's face? I LOVE the "Live! Live! Live!" that Bono chanted. SNL needs to feature real rock bands like this more often (again)!!
I cannot believe I have not seen them live before.
Girl, get yourself to a show--they're amazing live.
Yeah, she got one hell of a lapdance there--I couldn't tell if it was shock on her face or adoring-stunned-fan-rapture. Either way.
That'd be great--I hope they continued to film it. Cheap NBC will probably horde it until the next cheesy "great music moments of snl" special.
I know they're kicking off the tour in Florida in March, but does anyone know if the rest of the tourdates have been announced? I can't find them anywhere, so I'm assuming it hasn't been announced. I'm definitely going, though, no matter how much it costs.
Decided to post on this thread rather than the U2/SNL one I had started this morning, since that one seems to have gone more into a "the current state of SNL" convo...Anyway, turns out U2 did SIX songs for the crowd last night! (from a U2 blog)
U2 played “Vertigo,” “Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own,” and “I Will Follow” on tonight’s Saturday Night Live program in New York City. (Most bands perform only two songs on the program, with some occasionally slotted time for only one.)
Bono, Edge, and Adam all came out into the audience for the finale of “I Will Follow,” with Bono either making the day of, or completely terrifying, the woman whose lap he jumped into during the middle eight. (We could tell he made the day of SNL cast member Amy Poehler, who wept for joy when Bono embraced her at the song’s conclusion. Rachel Dratch, who was hopping up and down like a maniac, also seemed to be enjoying herself.) The credits rolled over the performance, as the show was scheduled to end at 1AM. As the broadcast ended, Bono could be heard saying, “One more?” as he returned to the stage.
A reader who attended the show tells us that the band gave an encore of three songs after the broadcast ended. They performed “All Because of You,” repeated “Vertigo” (without the countdown intro), and played a third song, which the reader cannot recall the title.
During the dress rehearsal for the show, Bono shared a story about his father before the band performed “Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own.” He described how his father used to listen to opera and wave his mother’s knitting needles like a conductor. Bono credited his father with passing on the ability to hit that “amazing note” in the song to him after he died.
Wow...can you imagine the excitement in that audience! It was great to see the cast all shaken up--Maya also seemed teary and several of the guys looked kind of stunned. I loved seeing even the crew guys in shadow off on the side cheering. Lucky crowd.
Wonder if this sort of impromptu concert has gone on after the show before?
Speaking of surprise U2 concerts. Word on the street is that they are supposed to be giving a surprise concert tomorrow somewhere in NYC. I've read earlier that it may be in Washington Square Park, but there is also an MTV Surprise Performance at Empire Fulton Ferry State Park in Brooklyn, described as "a surprise performance by one of the BIGGEST ROCK BANDS in the WORLD!...This event has been kept a secret because of the sheer magnitude of this band, but now some of you lucky 1iota members will be in on the secret... Come down to the show location in Brooklyn on Monday and you'll be in for one of the best performances of your life!"
I got two e-tix (that are "in excess of capacity, so there's no guarantee"...not that there's any guarantee that it's even going to be U2 playing, but the prospect of it has left me willing to take that chance and blow of my lit class tomorrow afternoon to find out!)
Oh, I hope that's what it is and you get to see them! I'm in the city and I don't know where that is--is that by the ferry terminal in Brooklyn?
The description certainly sounds like them....and they have a penchant for these surprise shows (Streets Have No Name in LA, etc.) so I hope you are right and that you get in! :)
I guess it's just on the Brooklyn side of the Brooklyn Bridge (I go to school at Pace University, so it's just a hop, skip, and a jump for me). I was thinking it sounded very much like them (a la "SHNN") myself. Eh, it's worth a shot! I was ready to blow off my Monday and Tuesday classes to go home early for Thanksgiving anyway, so it's not as if I wasn't planning on missing that class anyway! And it's supposed to be nice out weather-wise. We shall see...it'll be an experience no matter what!
Cool!! I'm sure I'll hear whether it happens or not, but keep us posted as to whether you can get there or not!
Would I come off as horribly fangirly-groupie-ish if I say that I'm actually trembling at the thoughts of a) them performing the impromptu concert for the SNL audience/cast last night; b) them preforming in a surprise location in NYC today?
Would I come off as horribly fangirly-groupie-ish if I said that I'm actually excited at prospect (b), and I don't even live in the States, much less NYC?
(PS. Kudos to whoever can find the 2005 tour dates - I couldn't find anything either.)
