US sends troops to Israel. Getting ready for war with Iran?

I guess since Iraq is "over" it's time to start another war! Maybe this is why Obama "reluctantly" put the country under martial law on New Year's Eve? Hard to find much about this in the msm but HuffPo had an article about it yesterday too.

From the article:

Defend and decimate the enemy? You really think any conflict in the Middle East would be that easy after Iraq and Afghanistan? People thought Iraq was going to be a cake walk too. 845 billion dollars later with hundreds of thousands of troops and civilians killed doesn't seem too easy does it? Sorry but that view seems a little naive.

It would be imprudent for us not to be prepared for an attack on our interests and citizens abroad. Of course we're sending troops.

Doesn't mean there's going to be a war. But in case you haven't been paying attention Iran has been making threats against Israel, America, and pretty much anyone else who they can blame for their economic problems.

And this really can't be compared in any way to Iraq. Completely different situation, completely different consequences.

Iran is has been surrounded by the US Military for years. Who's threatening who?
And I know they are different situations but I don't think the consequences are that different. Any conflict in Iran is bound to cost billions of dollars and thousands of lives.

Undoubtedly. I can't think of anything scarier or worse for us and the world than a war with Iran.

But you make it sound as if we're on the offensive. We are not. We are simply preparing should they follow through on their threats.

And no fingerlake, everyone is worried about the situation. It has the potential to absolutely devastating. If a war of some sort breaks out it may make Iraq war look like a blip on the radar of history.

I'm praying to whatever higher power there is that this all remains hyperbole and saber rattling.

^I agree. This is also a country that is developing nukes. And we have nukes.
Two countries that have nukes that are in a feud is not a good thing.

I don't think at this point that it would come to nuclear war. As far as I have read Iran is still at least a year away from weaponizing a warhead.

But they have a military (if not a navy) to match ours.

We have military bases all over the Middle East (and the world). An imperial power is always on the offensive.

For now I am just going to assume that publicly (because you never know what clandestine operations are up to until something either goes terribly wrong or learn about it years after) this will go as deep as the Poland-US missile defense deployment agreement near the Russian border that was considered a threat to Russia and pissed off the Russian government. The Iranian government will have fun with it but I don't think despite what Israel may want that Clinton or Pannetta want war, especially when the DoD have ok'd Congress to cut their budget.

War with Iran has always been talked about but then you bring in the potential consequences (say what you want about their government but Iranian citizens are the most pro-American/Westernized group in the region) and even the smartest people in foreign policy go mum on the issue. But I can definitely imagine the hawks coming out pushing for it, especially in a new congress and possibly different presidential administration.

I wonder if the United States would feel that way if China started building a bunch of military bases along the Canadian and Mexican border.
The United States has been on the offensive since the end of WWII.

Imagine the hijinks that would ensue as Jennie tries to persuade the handsome but befuddled agents of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard that she really is a "hitchhiking American gal who got lost somewhere in Kurdistan" and not an "agent of the Zionist entity engaged in espionage and cyber warfare"!
