Alright, the first play my school is doing when I get there is called HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE which is basically a dark comedy about pedophilia and incest.

So I'm wondering what sort of monologue I should look for? I'm not that familiar with the play so I'm not sure if it's more drama than comedy or more comedy than drama or an even mix. Should I maybe look for monologues that are more serious or one that's pretty comedic but with a hint of menace(Like...say...the "I shot my earlobe" monologue from RUMORS?).

Or should I maybe delve into absurdity with the bizarre monologues of Bruce McCulloch of KIDS IN THE HALL?

I don't know of a monologue to suggest to you off the top of my head, but I can tell you that the play is definitely more drama than comedy. There are VERY rarely comedic moments... and even then, it's at the expense of one of the characters. It's a show you sit through very uncomfortably, and even when you laugh it's not a chuckle, it's... uncomfortable, haha. I'd stick with a dramatic monologue for the audition. It's an amazing show, you're going to love it. But it's dramatic... Best of luck! My best friend was Lil' Bit at her college last semester, I'll see if she can reccommend something for you.

so then for a play with such subject matter, does it really matter if you would pick a monologue with "naughty words" or anything? because i found a good one from a book written by one of the coen brothers.

Well it depends. Since you're auditioning for a show that makes audience members uncomfortable, I guess it'd be ok if you used a monologue with similar subject matter. But I really don't know. Hm

So then, how would you contrast these? One that's really really really really disturbing and one that's only slightly disturbing? Or one that's incredibly disturbing and one that is, like, family friendly or something?

I'd say keep it creepy, but censored for terrible language. I mean, you never know so it's best to stay on the safe side. You could do far more harm swearing in front of a director who loaths bad language than not swearing infront of a director who swears like a sailor.
