Verbrato
#1Verbrato
Posted: 4/7/09 at 4:45pmI'm 13 years old and I cannot get a verbrato, no matter how hard I try. I try to relax my voice and sing as naturally as I can, but it doesn't seem to help. I heard that singing without a verbrato can potentially damage your voice, plus it just doesn't sound as good. Are there any exercises or techniques I can try to get a verbrato, or do I just have to wait until I get older and my voice matures? thanks!

I totally understand your frustration. I was forcing mine for years-- it sometimes still sounds forced, especially on extremely low notes, but it just started to come in naturally for me within the last year. And I'm nearly seventeen. But my vibrato is fairly small, and all of my favorite performers have very wide vibrato.
I do know that your vibrato is linked to your breath support.

You're only 13- vibrato comes with vocal maturity. I don't know who told you singing without vibrato can damage your voice, but that's only if you have vibrato naturally and you're forcing it out. Forcing vibrato into your voice when you don't have it can be just as bad. Vibrato is just a natural thing that comes with physical maturity, some people don't even get it until their late teens. Forced vibrato also sounds absolutely ridiculous, so it will benefit you more right now to just relax, open your mouth and sing the way you sing...
