Since the whole country is in love with Sarah Palin, you'd think that a hard-hitting satire of the left would have packed them in this weekend, especially when the film was filled with "A-List talent" (Fox's description, not mine) like 'That Guy from Saturday Night Live's Brother' and 'That Guy from Frasier' and 'that Country Dude who Sang About Butts', but surprisingly, the film tanked in it's first weekend out. IT got a dismal 18% rating from the users of Rotten Tomatoes and a perfect ZERO from the critics. It racked up only a little bit more than Bill Maher's new documentary (and played on three times as many screens). Did anyone go see it? Reviews?

Weird - the box office returns show that it opened at #9, above Bill Maher's garbage and right below the Christian movie "Fireproof" at #8.

Clearly its a liberal conspiracy.

So we're dying to know: What'd you think, Goth?

I guess sometimes movies do tank because they suck (but not the "Star Wars" prequels!)

An American Carol $3,810,000 (1639 screens)
Religulous $3,500,000 (502 screens)

As I said, An American Carol did a little more business but was on three times as many screens.

American Carol, by the way, had a $20 MILLION dollar budget. At least we won't have to sit through American Carol 2.

Besides not mentioning the Kirk Cameron dreck, how is what you said any different from what Joe said?

"Besides not mentioning the Kirk Cameron dreck, how is what you said any different from what Joe said?"

Opening at #9 doesn't mean that it tanked. And having two conservative movies in the Top Ten means that there is still a market for conservative movies.

Goth if a movie costs $20 Million, opened on 1600+ screens and only takes in $3M, it's tanked.

Sometimes, if a movie is REALLY well reviewed and generates HUGE word of mouth, it can dig its way up. American Carol did neither.

So I'm still curious...what did you think? Are you going to see it, Goth?

No, but making $3,810,000 on 1639 screens does.

If only Palin had done a cameo playing her flute clad in a two piece in "American Carol", then it would have shot straight to number 1.

On Friday, October 3, American Carol averaged an $846 per theater take.

Religulous average $2,213 per theater.

Apparently those of us who live in the reality-based community have a different definition of "tanked" than Goth.

I just can't believe Goth didn't support his conservative creatives just when they have their breakout moment. Neither AC or FIREPROOF, Goth? You have no business calling yourself a conservative wingnut!!

$846!?! I spent more on that on concessions when I went to see Religulous.

It's not really fair to compare per-screen average gross. I assume the vast majority of American Carol attendees paid the reduced "Senior" rates.

I don't think Goth's budget allows him to take in first run movies, what with that tiny overpriced apartment and all.

Goth's response seems positively Einstein-ian compared to the actual defense from Zucker & Right Wing Loons: The Chihuahua did it!

We have had heard from numerous people across the country that there has been some ticket fraud when buying a ticket for An American Carol this past weekend.

Please check your ticket. If you were in fact one of those people that were "mistakenly" sold a ticket for another movie please fill out the form below. Hold on to your ticket so we can have proof.

If you have noticed other irregularities with the theatres in your area please let us know in the comment section below. For instance, Rated R film rating (when in fact we are rated PG-13), posters not being up, not being listed on the marquee, image or focus problems, sound issues, etc.

Please email us a picture of your ticket stub to fraud@americancarol.com

We are investigating.

As Seth Myers would say "REALLY."

Joe, that has to be one of the funniest things I've read in a long time.

The Chihuahua ticket-buying conspiracy!!

It's going right up there with Watergate. Next they'll be suing ACNielsen for falsely reporting the ratings of Bible Man.

Wow. Isn't it weird that liberals are always accused of being mushy, namby-pambies, but it seems like all conservatives these days can do is whine, whine, whine?

No offense to multi-plex employees across America but they can't even deliver my Medium Diet Coke without spilling it all over, it's hard to believe they could pull off a coordinated ticket fraud like this.

Well, most of the people I see working at movie theatres ARE minorities, y'know. Makes ya think.

Of what I have no idea.

What was the Rosie O'Connell stuff like? Was it lighthearted ribbing or was it just nasty stuff like fat jokes?

Oh My God. Anyone who thinks a 20 million dollar film opening at number 9 is not considered a bomb really needs help. Yeah, I keep hearing the right wing morons repeating the lie that American Carol did better than Bill Maher's (which is getting decent reviews by the way)They fail to mention the number of screens it opened on. Hollywood insiders have already been pleased the money Maher's film has made (and it did not cost 20 million) The film will open later in the month on more screens so I am guessing in the coming weeks Bill Maher's film will be holding on while American Carol is long gone.

Zucker himself has said if the film fails he is finished in Hollywood. I would also like to point out that a film like American Carol was a very hard sell. The film will make no money outside of the USA(who would want to see a film where they bash other countries and foreigners?) The film was distributed by a French company yet the film mocks the French (Bill O'Reilly must be thrilled knowing his film debut was distributed by the French)So, whatever the film makes here is more or less it. Cable rights and dvd sales will help, but as far as box office goes, this is one of the Golden Turkey contenders.

One Patriot's revie from a right-wing message board:

"Just got back from seeing An American Carol, it started off a little off, but quickly warmed up and was quite funny for most of the movie. The parts which were not funny were emotionally moving and poignant. This is a movie I will see again and again I think. I highly recommend this movie for any American. Also, perhaps it would be good for democrats to see it also, might be able to convert some to being American again. Whoever they used as their "Rosie" was as offensive and nuts as the real, offensive and disgusting nut, Rosie."

I think they just might give the Clay-mates a run for their money in the "inadvertently hilarious" competition.
