Chase--
If you really want to lose weight, I'd reccommend going to a nutrionist. I go to a nutrionist, and so far, I've lost 25 lbs and haven't gained any of it back. I've gone from 185 to 160, and I'm trying to get down to 140 by the end of August when I have Musical auditions at my school! Being overweight has definitely kept me back from getting the leads I have wanted, so I'm now committed to losing weight!
Good luck! re: What Colleges offer Musical Theatre as a Major?

How did you find a nutrionist? I guess I could look one up in the yellow pages. I hope I would find one close. I don't really like going to the gym cause that's where all the buff ppl go and I"m not buff so I do'nt like going, lol. I would rather workout and stuff in private, the only problem is, is that when I'm in private I do'nt work out cause I don't have anyone pushing me to do it. I'm still loosing but I'm also gaining it back. THis is a really awkward stage...lol.

The most useful thing I found during my college search was the Peterson's Guide for schools with programs in the visual and performing arts... it should be easy to locate through any bookstore. It tells you lots of good practical information like cost, contact info, admission requirements, etc., plus the listing is pretty extensive. That way you can find a school that fits best with your personal needs. I've heard that some schools can be very picky about what "type" they will accept (like all ingenues or whatever) but there are roles for all types out there, and plenty of schools recognize that fact. If they really care about teaching, they should choose based on potential. After all, if you're already pro quality, what do you need them for?

I ended up going with Millikin University because it wasn't too big, so I didn't get lost or overwhelmed in the program, and there were plenty of performance opportunities (and not just for upperclassmen). It's not one of the more prominent schools, but we have lots of successful graduates (Sierra Boggess--Christine in Vegas Phantom, Maurice Murphy in Spelling Bee, and Carey Anderson--Sophie in ABBA; and those are just people I know from my four years)! The point is, there isn't any way to "rank" programs because they are all different, and each one will meet your needs differently. You just have to find the one that is the best match for you.

"basically, a MT school is looking for someone who will work after they graduate, therefore making a name for their school, blah, blah, blah."

Okay first of all ... Schools are not looking for people who will give their school a name. And the only way image counts to a school, is if you can SELL IT. That is what the whole profession is: selling it. You audition in front of a panel of educators and what you want to show them is you have potential and drive and enthusiasm to be an actor/singer/dancer. There are all different types of characters in musical theatre these days, them not accepting someone who is "selling it" is crap. If you can sell it, you got it. That's what education is for ... to get better and/or more confident about your abilities and talents and to learn techneque.

Since I have been trouble focussing on my school work and have personal family and life crisis' going on over and over, my advisor said that to be a working actor, you do not need to have a degree. If you want it, get it; it'll be there, but so many actors work on Broadway and everywhere without a degree.

Anyways ... come to Kent State! re: What Colleges offer Musical Theatre as a Major? Great musical theatre program. When I pick a school to just major in a BA in Theatre, I look at what shows the school does. Kent State, not sure about others, do Two musicals a year, and two plays, usually but not always classical. One of our shows in the second semester always has a visitng director. I just did Winter's Tale with Shakespearean director Vincint Dowling. He also discovered Tom Hanks... Next year we are doing Hair, and the director we had originally lined up was Austin Pendleton from the original Broadway Cast of 'Fiddler on the Roof' amongst other credits. That's why I like Kent State, I get to work with people I would normally not work with until I was out of college.

Hi...about Tisch...

Tisch does not offer a BA degree. It only offers a BFA. The BFA is in Drama BUT there are 7 studios that are straight Acting and one studio that is for Musical Theater. That studio is called CAP21 which stands for Collaborative Arts Project 21. CAP21 is a BFA program in Musical Theater (while the degree is officially called BFA Drama). The major IS musical theater. You must audition to be admitted whether for acting or for musical theater.

Here is the link to more information specifically about the CAP21 Program within the Drama Dept. at Tisch:

http://drama.tisch.nyu.edu/object/DR_CAP21.html

If I can help you, let me know as I have a daughter who attends this program for Musical Theater.
