What Show Would Make The Best Speech?

I just joined the Debate team at my high school. Not only do we do debate, forensics, and mock trial, but we go to all the speech competitions. The type of speech I really want to do this year (I can't remember the actual title of the event) is where you take a published piece of work (book, play, etc) and creatively act the whole thing out in about 10 minutes (playing all the parts and everything).

At first I thought "Of course! I'll do *WICKED*!" (my fav. show in the world!) But now that I think of it... if I did *WICKED* it would be kind of hard cuz I'd prob. have to base everything off the book (which sux compared to the show) because I don't have access to the actual published script of the Brdway show. My teacher said it wouldn't be a problem for me to just base it off the Brdwy show and present the book as my published work (many students base their speech of a movie but present the book as the published work and it has never been a problem) but that would be a little confusing I think because I have only seen the show once and don't remember all the lines in detail(exact quotes are required.) I could quote all of the music lyrics (which I know by heart) but I think it would be a little akward (and the judge would be annoyed) by everything rhyming. Although it may be somewhat challenging, I LOVE the idea of a *WICKED* speech (it provides very contrasting characters, humor, creativity, and a bit of philisophical depth all into one.) Does anyone know how I could get access to some scenes and/or lines from the show or is that totally illegal in every shape and form? (hey its worth a try asking!) If I don't end up doing *WICKED* it would be nice to try thinking of a Plan B (some other show that would be better to do OR a book that would make an entertaining summary.)

...Any ideas?...
THANKS!

I was in S&D...

Prose, Drama, and Humor are single events.

Depending on what you do, it fits into one of those categories.

Don't do Wicked. I don't mean to bash; but from a literary standpoint, the book is much more well-written and well-constructed than the script. If you do Wicked, stick to the book.

i agree. the book is much more in depth, serious, and all around better (in my opinion, an opinion i know we don't share.) If you are really interested in doing a musical or a play, check out some of the ones that have published texts...Into the Woods, Assassins, West Side Story (don't know how easy it is to find...I used to have a book that had both Romeo and Juliet and WSS in it)...check your library.

Those are all very good suggestions.

I don't know your gender; but if you're female, Three Tall Women makes an excellent literary/dramatic choice.

If you're male, try "ART" by Yasmina Reza.
If you're female, try "Wit" by Margaret Edson
And as either gender, you should consider "Apartment 3A" by Jeff Daniels.
And "The Last 5 Years" by Jason Robert Brown would be very challenging, but awesome if you can pull it off.
I starred in a short film called Magnetic Personality. Check it out!

I disagree with your opinion on the book. I, for one, thought the book was much interesting and intringing then the, IMO, somewhat shallow script of the musical.
Again, only my opinion.
As someone told me lately: "Ev'ryone deserves the chance to fly!"... He's there, the Phantom of the Opera!... I dreamed a dream in time gone bye... This is the moment! My final test!... PS. Couldn't choose just one :-)

Uh, 4real, everyone's been agreeing with you.

Anyway, I thought of the "baseball and democracy" monologue in Take Me Out when I read this topic, but it doesn't really work for the actual question. :P
