A NY television news program asked me to "Skype" the events in my area during tomorrow's storm. The trouble is, I have only the foggiest notion what this is and the info I got when I did a Google search wasn't helpful. Do I need a webcam? Would a cellphone suffice?

I use it all the time. You can just talk with no picture or web cam or you can use a webcam. I talk to family in Europe once in a while and it is AMAZING!(and free!)

It seems that I would need a webcam for this. Luckily I don't have one or else the early morning viewers in the Tri-State area would be subjected to Dollypop before his makeup call.
You don't need a webcam. I have a MAC with a built in camera. If I don't feel like I wanna be seen, I'll switch it off. It's very easy and my sister is thinking about getting rid of her land line. Skype can save you a lot of $$$. You should look into it. I love it!
Just remember Skype does not support 911 calls. If emerg services need to locate you they will not be able to.There was a case in TO about a child dying from a pool accident EMS could not locate the house.

My computer doesn't have a built in camera. In a situation like this, why would anyone want to talk about a hurricane on Skype without showing images?
I've graciously declined the offer.

My mom and I both have Macs and we Skype often. Although she always calls and wants to Skype when I've just woken up and look like crap. I know it's just my mom, but still.
I'm dating a guy in London. I'm in Florida.
Skype is a Godsend.
