This is a great idea from Yann Martel, the author who brought us "Life of Pi", one of my favorite books.
I am going to try to use this as my source for a book club, since I am always looking for something new to read. It would be cool if some of you would want to join in and we could discuss the books in this thread.
What is Stephen Harper reading?
MOTHER Harper is reading the TV guide and the checking up on the rules of SORRY!
"How clearly and concisely our vain and callous ways are showed up. Effortlessly, Tolstoy examines life’s shallow exteriors as well as its inner workings. And yet this pageant of folly and belated wisdom comes not like a dull moral lesson, but heavy, as if from a downpour, with all the weight, shine and freshness of real life. We see, vividly, Ivan Ilych’s errors—oh, they are so clear to us, we certainly aren’t making his mistakes—until one day we realize that someone is looking at us as if we were a character in The Death of Ivan Ilych." -Yann Martel
So I finished "The Death of Ivan Ilych" by Tolstoy yesterday.
It was very gripping, and Tolstoy had some very grave things to say about the process of Death, and the feelings that people have about you when you are slowly dying.
I thought the book pointed out people's inward selfish desires that they don't normally share with anyone outwardly, and how people Live thier lives so non-chalantly until it is too late.
I was very affected by the last few Chapters in the book, as Ivan was slowly and painfully getting worse, until all he could do was scream in his final hours.
Has anyone else read this short novella? any opinions to add to mine? I would love to know what other people think who have read this book, or would like to contribute to Tolstoy's dire thoughts of death.
