What is a ".rar" file?

I got something from megaupload and it's a ".rar" file, although the person who sent it to me sent it from iTunes. .rar files apparently don't copy into iTunes and I've never heard of them before. Does anyone know what's going on? It says that Windows doesn't even have a program to open the file.

Its a file that is zipped with the winrar program, you'll need winrar to unzip it, which you can get from download.com...

A .rar file is like a .zip file. It can be opened with WinRar, which has a free trial download but it never disables itself so you can keep it forever and it will still work. I believe a .rar makes the file size smaller, otherwise I can't see the point of having it.

Just google WinRar Free Trial and you can download it. Winrar will unzip it and then you'll be able to access the music files and put them into iTunes or whatever.

It does make the file smaller, also it groups the files together so you don't have to upload them to an upload site song by song...

.rar is like WinZip.

It takes a large number of files, combines them into one file.

It's more of a compresser...for when you send multiple files.

For example, you can only put one file on YSI. .Rar and .Zip allows you to combine multiple files into one folder-file and upload it to YSI.

Ok, I've got them out. Thank you all very much.

At the risk of sounding dumb, if I delete the files that show up on my desktop, will I delete the whole thing? I'm putting them in My Music and I don't want them cluttering up the desktop.

Yes, but Sendspace doesn't allow you to download more than one thing at a time.

No, you can delete the .rar file after it's extracted. You'll see the .rar and then a folder; the folder will have the individual files in it, and that's what you want to keep. The other thing will be empty and useless, just like a .zip folder.

As long as you've successfully moved them into your music folder, then you can delete them off thedesktop...

Actually I like YSI for downloading, its uploading that it bothers me, halfway through it often ends up going page unavailable and then I grumble at it...but it doesn't help...

Yes, you can delete the files on your desktop, as well, as long as they aren't the mp3's themselves.

YSI freezes a lot when I upload, which is kind of a bitch. I like MU, but it doesn't work on Safari, so I have to open up Mozilla to use it.

MU takes forever. And this add always pops up about dating woman - and it says what town I'm in. So it knows where I am. The town changed when I went home...freaky.

I don't need to see pictures of average chicks showing their less than average bazongas when I want to download a "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" recording.

I'm certainly not a fan of the MegaUpload softcore porn, but I've found it's the most reliable site for uploading files. YSI and SendSpace tend to freeze on me, although it might have something to do with my mediocre connection.

That happens to me too.

Also, my internet connection gets interrupted pretty frequently. Sometimes the downloads won't resume when I re-connect, so I have to start over. I hate it.

But I would hate to think that MegaUpload knows where I'm at. And I always click on the ad because it pops up at the worst times.

Um...I got confused...I thought it was amazon.com...really...

It did let me buy a new Ipod accessory off of it though, I-buzz, I think it gives massages or something...
