What's UP, DOC?

Well. I thought I heard it all.
I have been on a strict diet and have been snacking on carrots and was wondering why I have not lost any weight.
Today, a Doctor friend of mine told me that carrots are as bad as candy.
You mean I have been eating carrots thinking it was healthy and my body has been storing it as sugar and might as well have been eating Jelly Beans?
HAS ANYONE HEARD CARROTS HAVE AS MUCH SUGAR AS CANDY?
Who would have guessed.

re: What's UP DOC?

C2 - Yes, I knew that and generally do not eat carrots. The South Beath Diet has a guide that shows the amount of sugar in various foods. I am not endorsing the diet, I just know that the guide has great info as to sugar and carbs.

The guide is a cheap book, not the SB diet.

Who would ever think THAT.
I LOVE CARROTS.
SUCKS, I will get that book.
To think that I could have been eating Jelly Beans and have the same reaction.

re: What's UP DOC?

I do not regularly exercise, so I must limit my sugar intake. Some people can eat all the sugar they want.

You love carrots because they are tasty.

In my house we talk about these issues daily.

re: What's UP DOC?

Look up snow peas and sugar snap peas.
Sucks.
All the veggies I eat are full of sugar.

re: What's UP DOC?

carrots are still healthier ... the sugar is natural instead of processed ... and they have vitamins ... don't they??

re: What's UP DOC?

I almost included peas in my last post. I laughed very hard!!!

Carrots certainly have value, I am not a nutritionist, but I look personally at the sugar count.

"a Doctor friend of mine told me that carrots are as bad as candy."

Any DOCTOR who would say that carrots are "as bad as candy" should have his license revoked.

Carrots are a good source of fiber, essential in fighting disease, both of the heart and colo-rectal variety.

They are a fine source of Vitamin A.

A controlled trial showed that eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables containing folic acid, beta-carotene, and vitamin C effectively lowered homocysteine levels. Healthy people were assigned to either a diet containing a pound of fruits and vegetables per day, or to a diet containing 3 1/2 ounces (99g) of fruits and vegetables per day. After four weeks, those eating the higher amount of fruits and vegetables had an 11 percent lower homocysteine level compared to those eating the lower amount of fruits and vegetables.

Many dietary studies have found that women receiving high amounts of nutrients from fruits and vegetables have less risk of cervical dysplasia. Protective effects may be especially strong from diets high in dark yellow and orange vegetables.

LIKE CARROTS, CORINE.
And not anything like candy. White chocolate included.

re: What's UP DOC?

Well, Namo kinda made my reply unnecessary, but while you don't want to go hog wild on the carrots, filling up on a cup of baby carrots once a day is not going to keep you from losing weight. Yes, they have carbs. But the final calorie count for a cup of carrots is still only 52. Munch away. The benefits far outweigh (cringe) the negatives.

re: What's UP DOC?

Iflit and Name - that may be true, but there are other cups of veggies with less sugar – broccoli, for example. I HATE BROCOLI, but have consumed bushels lately.

Calories are the key.

re: What's UP DOC?

It's all about the glycemic index, Corine: a measure of the food's ability to elevate blood sugar. The glycemic index is about the quality of the carbohydrates, not the quantity.

Carrots aren't on this chart but they come in with a Glycemic Index of 47, between and orange and a banana. Your doctor-friend was being hyerbolic when he/she said carrots were as bad as candy.

re: What's UP DOC?

Once Poppy Bush said he hated broccoli and he was "Nahtguhdoit" (eat it) I developed QUITE the taste for the yummy green stalks. Even merely blanched, broccoli is superb.

I took exception to the "as bad as candy" line. Sounds like a doctor who has heard from patients for too long that they care more about how good they look than how well they are.

Jamba Juice parades itself as a healthy place, but unless you are skinny or a marathon runner - keep away.

re: What's UP DOC?

It's healthier than a Big Gulp Slurpee. There are empty calories. And there are calories your body can use. It's very helpful if you give your body something to do with the good calories.

Namo - I agree in re: calories. Now, just to show the influence of BWW, the only reason that I know of Jammba Juice is because of another thread. I saw one at Madison and Wells in Chicago and I took a flier - threr is one drink that has 890 calories!!!!

re: What's UP DOC?

Namo and Iflit are right. Candy has No nutritional value. Carrots are the best source of Vitamin A around, and an important provider of antioxidents. This carb-phobia fad has got to go. Telling people they can eat all the steak fat drenched in butter and cream that they want, while avoiding orange juice, carrots, rice, etc. is a surefire prescription for future cancer and heart disease. The most important thing to remember is, everything in balance and moderation and you'll be fine.

re: What's UP DOC?

One word for you, Corine: VARIETY.

Eat some carrots, and add some broccoli to the mix.

For snack, a celery stick with PB is a great snack.

re: What's UP DOC?

kjklo - yes moderation is the key - but, many do not have the key.

Back to the carrots, some diets do include cream and that is silly and stupid, but my experience is that you can make some healthy choices that might include veggies with less sugar.

re: What's UP DOC?

I can eat half a bag of baby carrots.
I love them and Grape tomatoes.
Lawyer, I don't drink juice but I do drink diet soda and Ice Coffee with equal.
But I do eat a lot of fresh fruit.

re: What's UP DOC?

Fresh fruit has fiber, etc and is better than plain old juice with its "evil" sugar!

I am having a Coca Cola Zero right now!! Yum.

re: What's UP DOC?

Didn't I read somewhere that carrots can stunt your growth?
PEACE.

re: What's UP DOC?

Corine, if you eat Baby Carrots and grape tomatoes and drink diet soda you are in good shape! The Atkins craze has brainwashed people into thinking "Carbs BAD! Fat GOOD!" The simple truth is, if you eat less and burn more, you will lose weight. If you are better able to lose weight by eating "Atkins" then good for you-- but you will only lose weight if you cut your calorie intake and increase activity!

The "Carrots are bad as candy" crap has floated around for years now. Never see that doctor again.
